Spotify goes live in the US, iOS app now available

As expected, Spotify went live in the US at 8 am ET. The free service which limits the amount of time you can listen will be available via invites which will roll out gradually starting today. If you don't want to wait, you can grab a paid Spotify plan right now.
Subscribers in the US can sign up for either the ad-free, unlimited service (US$4.99 monthly) or the premium, mobile service (US$9.99 monthly). You can stream directly using your Mac or go mobile with the iPhone app which is now available in the US App Store.

I got an invite and started using it and it is cool but...
1) 2gb cap for ATT and verizon so streaming will be costly
2) I prefer to own the music vs just renting it. If I stop paying, I will no longer have access to music.
Just like Steve Jobs said in the previous keynote - People likes to listen to music over and over again so owning is a better option. It is not like movies that you might watch 2 or 3 times.
Since I listen to music exclusively on my iPad, the cost would be ten bucks. For ten dollars a month I can buy a lot of music. When I get tired of my music, I listen to the 'radio' on my iPad using one of the free radio apps. So then, why would I pay so much money for music I cannot keep?

I am currently streaming from Canada without any issues whatsoever, and am not using a VPN.
It's too bad you have to sign up for the $10/month service in order to use it on your iPhone. They should at least let you listen with ads, etc on the iPhone for free.
July 14 2011 at 12:03 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyGah. It kills me that Spotify has an Apple approved iOS app but Grooveshark doesn't. Spotify may be cleaner but I only pay $3/mo to have unlimited grooveshark, no ads and streaming on my iPhone and iPad.
July 14 2011 at 11:39 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replymaybe because grooveshark is not a licensed way of getting music.
not sure if you understand how grooveshark works. it scours the internet for cached and hosted music files and shows you a list of those songs. you can then stream those to your computer (or mobile device if you pay extra $8 fee) and even create "playlists" of the song file URLs. they have no agreements with any major labels. that is why apple chose to deny them an AppStore placement. You can get grooveshark from Cydia if your device is jailbroken, but you still have to pay for mobile service after the first 45 songs. Spotify is more like what LaLa was, free streaming. (of course lala only let you listen once, then u had to pay 0.10 if you wanted to web-listen again)
is't there some legal question if Groovshark is paying there way with the powers the be (kinda like allofmp3.com) that why they got pulled?

I saw 9 reviews of the app when I downloaded it so I can't imagine there being THAT many people ahead of me.

July 14 2011 at 12:04 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyOne thing I really like about Pandora over this is NOT having to pick what to listen to. I typically listen to music in the car. To simply plug in my iPhone, load up Pandora, and drive is much easier than having to decide what I want to listen to, search for it, and play.
