BYTE retracts anti-Apple rant by blogger

Back in the early days of the personal computer revolution, there was no better magazine to read than BYTE. It was often a thick tome full of reviews, programming tips, and insightful columns by industry legends. The magazine disappeared in 1998, but was recently resurrected as an online magazine by the publishers of Information Week. It's obvious the BYTE name retains much of its journalistic credibility, as the magazine recently retracted an anti-Apple rant by one of its bloggers.

The post, titled "The Crucible: A Sobering Look at Apple," was written by BYTE blogger Demetrius Mandzych and published originally on July 11, 2011. Whenever a post starts out by stating that

In all honesty, I don't know why people buy products from Apple. Apple assures everyone its products 'just work,' that specs don't matter and that its products are like finely-tuned German roadsters ... The reverse is actually the case.

you have to wonder what's going on in the author's mind. By July 15, there were a number of negative reader responses, and BYTE pulled the post. The rant is back now, but completely covered with a strikethrough from beginning to end, and with an apology at the beginning:

The opinion column that follows doesn't live up to the proud tradition and our best intentions for BYTE. It not only lacks the deep and authoritative technical content that we want BYTE to be known for, but it also doesn't reflect the community's views on Apple. Although there are plenty of people who don't like Apple products, and some who have had bad experiences with Apple, those are the exception, not the rule.

As you see from our heavy coverage of Apple – in particular our aggressive coverage of OS X Lion -- we consider Apple and its products to be important topics for news, reviews, how tos, tips, and debate. BYTE strives for authority above all, in keeping with the highest journalistic standards. That standard was not met here.

Well done, BYTE. And welcome back. (I'm personally happy to see sci-fi legend Jerry Pournelle back in the saddle at Chaos Manor.)

So, in no way, Apple has become a snarling, money hungry beast following the changeover from Apple Computer Inc. to Apple Inc?

Can one really be considered as one of the Apple faithful when they can simply accept the current Apple that is merely a shadow of the company's former greatness? Should we simply stay silent when something you love is doing poorly, all for the sake of appearances... Or should we speak up before things go from bad to even worse?

What's interesting to me is that, in light of Final Cut Pro X's debut, many people are using the same rants. I'm glad someone finally, and intelligently, said it like it is with these ranters... I understand criticism, but that's ridiculous.

Brilliant move, by Byte and by Mr. Mandzych.

Until I read about this little tempest in a teapot, I had no idea that Byte was re-launching, and Demetrius was a photographer known only to his family and friends. Now the on-line Byte is being mentioned all over the place. People are linking to the lined-out post--silly and pointless as it is--and perhaps waiting to poking around the rest of the site. On top of that, Demetrius Mandzych is now officially a "tech columnist," when his only other qualifications prior to this non-troversy seemed to be a bachelor's degree in game design and a rather pompoous, writing style.

As Brendan Behan, the Irish author said, "There is no such thing as bad publicity."

Between this embarrassment and the generally outdated-on-arrival look and feel of the site, Byte might be best off just rebooting all over again in another six months. This won't work.

Am I the only one here who thing's BYTE handled this completely wrong? Since when is it an editor's job to apologize for an opinion piece? BYTE hired this guy for his opinions and they published his work. If the BYTE editor didn't care for the article they should never have published it to begin with. But to retract the entire article on the basis of some sort of an apology for the guy's opinions is flat out wrong, and BYTE should be ashamed of that.

Stand by your writers and your articles. Hire someone else to write an opposing opinion piece; it happens on Engadget and TUAW all the time. Pulling the article makes you look way worse, like you're apologizing not to your readers, but to the company that got slammed in the OPINION article.

Demetrius Mandzych looks like a kid, behaves like a kid and had his nappie pulled down and got a public spanking on his bottom.

The problem I have with the article was that it wasn't written from the author's personal experience. Not once did I get the idea that Mandzych has ever owned or used an Apple product. The article sounds like he did his research by reading blogs and other articles written by other authors. He shares no personal "this is what happened to me and my iPhone, iMac or iPad"--it's all just a rant about how bad Apple is and how Apple has hoodwinked all its millions of users. Guess what: People already DO vote with their dollars. If people didn't love Apple products, they wouldn't buy them; end of story. You will never make friends by telling them that they're stupid for liking something. Honestly, the article amounted to "If you like Apple, you suck."

I am always amused at Apple bashing. Don't like 'em don't buy 'em. However, I do, I have, and I will. I have had problems with some of them, but I have had problems with my Whirlpool Washer, my Ford Escort and my Canon Camera. When the problems outweigh the benefits I will buy something different. So far it has been Apple since 1985 (an Apple IIe). My latest purchase was my iPhone 4 two weeks ago. And there will be more Macs, iPods, and maybe even an iPad, no matter what Apple bashing occurs out there. I base my decision on my own experience and right now, I don't see my self ever buying anything but Apple.

LOL it's pretty bad that the article looks like it's written by some random anti-apple forum troll.
