Google's Eric Schmidt claims Apple litigates, doesn't innovate
Google's Eric Schmidt spoke at a mobile conference in Tokyo and addressed HTC's early loss to Apple in a patent infringement case. Schmidt believes HTC will prevail and is "not too worried about this" case. He also added that Google will "make sure" HTC does not lose this case.
Schmidt didn't say how Google would support the Taiwanese handset maker, but cash and legal counsel are the two obvious contributions. His response also suggests this umbrella of protection would extend to any manufacturer facing litigation over Android.
It wouldn't be a proper Schmidt talk without some controversy and the Google chief did not disappoint. Instead of addressing the infringement issues brought up by the complaint, Schmidt took a pot shot at Apple when he indirectly accuses the company of using lawsuits instead of innovation to compete in the marketplace. Schmidt says,
"We have seen an explosion of Android devices entering the market and, because of our successes, competitors are responding with lawsuits as they cannot respond through innovations."
Schmidt can say all he wants about Apple as this childish banter means very little in the marketplace. All this controversy will be forgotten later today when Apple announces its Q3 2011 earnings and knocks everyone socks off.

Hey Kelly, how about just reporting the news instead of asserting your opinion of Eric and his company throughout the article. Your fanboyism is so blatantly obvious.

Didn't Eric Schmidt use to sit on Apple's Board when the first iPhone came out? or am I mistaken? He is such a hippocrate...as @freediverx stated "Google just imitates."

Google launch new and innovative services all the time, but the user interface and function almost invariably remain stagnant, untouched, until users don’t care about them any more. The concept behind each new idea will eventually become dated, lose its user base and become irrelevant.
In order to put Google’s train back on the right track, the final destination of said train must be defined. What does the company do? How would you define Google? Sure, they are famous for search, and that’s still their core business, but it would be silly to call such a varied company just a “Search Engine.”
Are they a media company? Communications? Advertising? Software? All of these? Who knows. Whatever it is, it’s messy. The general issue is that they have forgotten to stick to their mission statement :
“to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful”

I don't really see the gripe on Apple here.
When Steve showed off the original iPhone there was NOTHING like it on the market, or even close to market. True, the individual pieces existed, but NOBODY pit them together like that... Nokia and Microsoft had damn near a DECADE lead making phones. Even Google's Android didn't have many of those features.. For the first two years of iPhone, even Android was mostly vaporware and not SELLING on phones.
Steve said, right in the very first presentation Apple filed as many patents as they could... That makes everybody infringing AUTOMATICALLY knowing when the courts approve or deny Apple's claims. Of course Apple is going to fight... iPhone was a massive... Sink the company.. Kind of gamble. Apple made it look easy, but they really worked their asses off.. Exactly what patents are for.
I'm for reverse engineering "around" patents... If you can pull off the court review... Then YOU can have a patent too! But Google is just playing fast and loose... They're gonna get burned.
If we can all be just a tad honest here Apple is guilty of doing very similar things regarding borrowing ideas. I personally do not agree with Schmidt's comment and think it was uncalled for, but the fact of the matter is Apple has lost numerous patent lawsuits themselves. I'm just going from memory so forgive me if I am mistaken but to name just a few, Coverflow, iPod playlist, Time machine, etc. Some would argue that some of the loses were awarded to so called patent trolls but Apple likes to patent a lot of "ideas" that are not even proof of concept yet.
"My" personal opinion is that Apple makes superior products and one of their strongest qualities is to take existing ideas / interfaces and make them beautiful and better than the original (and I'm not saying Apple does not "create" things themselves by any means because they do). I believe nothing is even in the same ballpark as OS X and they have done wonderful things with iOS but when iOS5 is released how many of us will actually admit some new UI's changes like the notifications pulldown are "inspired" by Android.
Posting from my MacBook and I am huge Apple fan, but I think the phone competition is heating up and that benefits all of us.
Spelling correction:
"some of the loses" should be: some of the losses...
This is the second Apple blog I take out of my feed this week.

July 19 2011 at 5:44 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWhat a jerk! This from a man who's company blantanly copied Apple's mobile OS. Eric Schmidt is an ass. If it were not for Apple's innovation, the consumer market for smartphones will still be very tiny. Google owes a great deal of Android's success to Apple and the iPhone.
