iPad competitors will need to be a lot cheaper to capture market share

The big message from a Retrovo survey released today of 1000 consumers carried out last month indicates competitors to the iPad will have to compete with a large price difference.

With rumors about an Amazon tablet circulating, 55% of survey respondents said They'd look at an Amazon tablet first. 38% cited Dell and Samsung, and 31% cited HP and Motorola. The key finding is that when asked to decide on a tablet other than a $499 base iPad, 79% of the consumers said they would go with Android only if it was less than $250. The same survey group members who said they planned to buy a tablet in the next year favored an iPad. 50% would choose one, while 21% favored an Android flavored device.

It seems Apple remains dominant, and for the rest of potential buyers it's really all about cost, an area that Apple traditionally doesn't play in. Of course you never know what a future Apple product might bring. If you'd like to read the whole survey, you can get it here. To our readers, if you don't have an iPad yet, would a cheaper tablet from Apple get you to the Apple Store? And if not, would an Android tablet and $250-$300 tempt you to try one?

iPad competitors just don't have the charisma that Apple products have. So what if they're products have better specs or can do a lot more as long as they don't have the C-factor then it's pretty much the iPad... and others.

I dont care what stuff, they manage to stuff into a tablet at what price, iPad(2) would be my choise, untill the day that they catch up to iOS 5... witch by the looks of it will happen when iOS 7 comes out... and you will never gues what i will be saying then :P

Its the whole apple ecosystem - perhaps it can not do all you want.. but what it does, it does GOOD.
and that is apple in a nutshell when they us the iPhone - it was missing things like MMS and Copy Paste - but what it did it did perfect, and WAY WAY better than any any other phone

To be honest, what I'm mostly waiting for is my birthday and the money with which to buy an iPad. However, what is most important to me at the moment is the display - I've really got my fingers crossed that the rumours of an updated display this year are true since that will tie in nicely with when I can make a purchase and reading is what the device will be primarily used for.

Apple tends to deliver something that other hardware often lacks. It has to do with the X-factor underneath the obvious outer skin. Sometimes it's ergonomics. Sometimes it's logic. Some times it's function. Sometimes it's raw power. Sometimes it's a depth of design thinking. Sometimes it's an aspect that's hard to explain.

There's an "Apple personality" that often rises to the surface as you use their stuff.

Microsoft has been looking at Apple since Day One. And they still don't get it.

Really why must it be all or nothing I own an iPad 2 I owned the original iPad as well I found them both very useful and like most good gadgets I probably wouldn't want to go with out it. I am an Apple fan but I appreciate android I own an Evo 4g which I love!
But because I own an apple tablet doesn't mean I feel the need to justify my purchase by bashing the competition the samsung 10.1 tab looks like a well made tablet the zoom is pretty good and yes it's thick and plasticy but I like the hp touch pad too.
I guess the iPad works for me that's why I bought the second one when it came out and not an android tablet I don't miss flash in fact I don't think I have ever seen a message pop up saying I need flash so all the android fans really need to give that argument up unless you must have it for the sites you frequent it's really not a major loss flash is terrible on my evo so let's be honest it's just not there yet as far as mobile goes.
So I think everyone should buy the tablet that's right for them and stop criticizing people because they didn't by the same unit you did.

Totally agreed with ur statement. And yeah, Flash isn't necessary this days when HTML5 is in da house. Evo 4G is a great Android option talking about phones. There's no need to keep bashing the competition, but at least is funny!

I'll never buy another Apple product. Lack of being able to access Adobe Flash on my iPad for no good reason is rediculous!

A cheaper iPad would certainly get me in the store. The only tempting part about Android for me, though, is support for flash.

I don't really like the Android UI, so I doubt I would be tempted what ever the price point, especially when you think only $499 gets you the iPad anyway. I can understand the survey logic though, someone who wasn't biased either way would look at the main device the iPad and would think if I'm going to go with something other than this, it's got to be majorly cheaper!!

Not even tempted to buy an Android device. Just recently heard of malware from the Android Marketplace that was designed to drain the device battery. While that app was removed, the commenters did discuss how easy it was to post that kind of software in that store. No thanks to that. No thanks to software incompatibilities and no thanks to cheap hardware.

An iPad makes you look hipster awesome at Starbucks.
