Hackintosh repaired at Apple Genius Bar

So, you're in Shanghai, China with your fake MacBook Air when it suddenly stops working. What do you do? Make an appointment at the real Genius Bar for the Apple Store, Pudong in Shanghai and get help.

Fortunately for the man who brought the "MacBook Air" into the store, the Geniuses behind the bar were in a good mood and actually helped him out with diagnostics and troubleshooting. I somehow feel this type of friendly and helpful reception might be lacking if a certain colleague of mine brought her trio of hackintosh netbooks into a local Apple Store here in the U.S.

I'll bet those "Geniuses' in the shot above won't have their jobs much longer after Apple execs get a load of this blog.

The priority at any Apple store is to create an experience for the customer that makes them want to come back and tell all their friends how great the Apple Store is. I suspect if the genius bar was not too swamped with real Macs waiting to be fixed, there is a good chance of a hackintosh being helped.

The difference between your colleague and the chinese customer is that the former knows she is using a hacked, unlicensed copy of os X where as the chinese doesn't even know that the laptop he is using is not even a genuine Apple!

Customer care is required to go the extra mile…. not out of the road itself!

This is China. You can buy counterfeit stuff at Walmart. It's a non-issue there. Western copyright laws are stupid.

Frankly, I think this is awesome. To all the people crying for Apple to fire those employees, I look at it this way - those workers are putting the *CUSTOMER* first, before corporation or policies. The poor guy paid real money for a real computer - it just happens to be counterfeit. Rather than shun the guy and turn him away, the Apple employees decided to be nice and help him out with what was maybe a relatively simple problem.

That's good customer service, if you ask me. They probably did inform the customer that he had, in fact, bought a counterfeit. Hopefully now he'll know to buy it directly from the store, rather than a 3rd party merchant.

The problem is the customer, was not a customer at all.

Exactly. One thing that has really been turning me away from Apple, and consumerism in general for that matter, is the entitled attitude so many people have. Yes you're running Apple software on a computer but you're running an ILLEGAL copy of this software on NON-APPLE hardware; therefore you are not a customer of Apple's and should not have even been helped.

That Apple employee who "troubleshot" a counterfeit Apple laptop should be fired for incompetence. Or fired for compromising the integrity of the Apple brand. Apple has a very strict code of ethics. Not that China government would care...

I've been to this very Apple Store a coupe of months ago and from my experience the (friendly and everything) Geniuses might just not have noticed this is a fake. Really, they need to learn a LOT.

You can not be serious...the real macbook air looks nothing like the fake ones.
I'm sure they knew it was fake and just wanted to be good, kind, decent human beings -- especially considering what kind of a country they live in. Mad props to them.

I don't think you know WHAT kind of country they're living in. Obviously you have heard it on TV, China is so so terrible and stuff. I think you should go there and visit if you want your own opinion.

And by the way I find your lack of ability to catch sarcasm quite disturbing. I just wrote they're really far from brilliant.
