Boxee now available for iPad (Updated)

The folks at Boxee announced that they've released an iPad app and media manager for streaming video files from a computer to the Boxee app.
The Boxee app includes the following features:
- Social media functions that links your Boxee viewing to Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr
- The ability to save videos to watch later
- Streaming from a computer via the media manager
- The ability to send video from your iPad to the Boxee box connected to a TV
Although the link provided to email subscribers is currently not active and an App Store search doesn't bring it up, you can find the free app here.
Update: We tested the app's Mac-to-iPad streaming and it works exceptionally well. If you're looking for a free way to stream video (of almost any kind -- we tried AVI, WMV and MP4 and all did well except when certain older codecs hammered the CPU causing the fans to blow) the Boxee app is quite good. The bookmarklet is also great as it's like Instapaper for video. You can check that out here. We'll have a hands-on later this week. - Ed.

I like it. I have enabled the AirPlay feature and it works surprisingly well. I'm curious if it would work with the IOS 5 AirPlay for all apps including Real Racing 2 HD. Since I'm not a dev or willing to pay a $100 a year to play with the beta versions I guess someone else will need to discover that. Either way I thin Apple just lost a few dozen reasons for me to even look at the Apple TV. Since the Boxee Box supports the the protocol I see no reason to get the still tragically limited Apple TV with it's severely limited codex support.
I do wish the Media Software was better designed. It has a very limited interface and can't directly be pointed to a network share. It will allow you to point it at a Mapped Network Drive but that is a little lame. As good as the video looks I can only think that the stream to feature just forces the boxee box to go to the local media bi-passing the iPad. That is a good thing since it would make no since to convert for the iPad just to stream it to the Boxee Box. I do wish the iPad Apps interface was able to just see everything that the Boxee Box has identified so you could use it as a big remote.
This is their first real attempt I'm sure that they will smooth things out as people get a look at it.
So much better than StreamToMe! I just need to find a way to index "/Volumes". I've tried everything! Even creating an alias doesn't seem to work...
