Cablevision brings live TV streaming to iPhone and iPod touch

Cablevision has released the Optimum app for iPhone and iPod touch. The app allows Cablevision subscribers to stream live TV to an iPhones or iPod touch while in their home. What's cooler than streaming live TV is that the app even lets you watch your On Demand movies and shows on your iPod touch and iPhone.

The app also lets you use either device as a remote control for your cable box, allowing you to schedule DVR recordings of shows right from your iPhone or iPod. The Optimum app follows Cablevision's release of Optimum for iPad back in April. Both apps are a free download and require users to be a Cablevision subscriber.

There is an app called Telly that does OTA ATSC streaming to your iphone/ipad. It works over wifi so you can be anywhere. However, a windows PC is required...which makes it not so convenient.

Since the Cablevision app only lets you stream while at home, I don’t think it will such a great app. I use the DISH Remote Access app and it is awesome! I have not missed a show ever since I got this app. I love being able to stream live TV and recorded shows from my 922 SlingLoaded receiver to my phone anywhere I am! As a customer and employee of DISH Network, I have been using the app for a long time and I can say that being able to watch TV when and where I want it the best!

App's still a bit buggy in the remote control/DVR management area (was better in the last version before 2.0), but the Live TV works great. Getting quite a bit of "server timeout" errors that I'm not sure of the cause, and I do sometimes get a message about not being on my home network when all I want to do is set my DVR recordings away from home.

Usually a simple app relaunch will fix most things. Thumbs up overall, though.

Now if Cablevision would get HBO Go and figure out how to get auto-login for iOS devices working at WiFi hotspots they'd be onto something here.

The auto-login is easy. You just associate your device with your Optimum ID.
