Apple reportedly adds earthquake warning to Japanese iOS

Apple is supposedly adding an Earthquake widget to its Japanese version of iOS 5. The widget will connect to Japan's earthquake warning system and will alert iPhone owners of an impending natural disaster. The system will tie into iOS 5's new notification center and give Japanese residents a few extra minutes to prepare for an earthquake and possible Tsunami. The early notification could lower your battery life, but that's an acceptable trade-off for public and personal safety.

It's interesting that iOS 5 features rounded toggles when they used to be more square butt in Mac OS X they used to be rounded and with Lion are now rectangular.

Seeing how other sources have reported on this, It might be safe to take it beyond "supposedly" status.

None the less, I'm not sure this would lower battery life, This has been reported to be a push notification, so I'm not thinking it's constantly pulling something down every 3 minutes, as in some cases, that's the total amount of time you'd have between a warning being issued, and the actual earthquake occurring.

Wow, that app is remarkably like the current iPhone early earthquake warning app in Japan! Looking forward to seeing something better built into iOS.
