Verizon ad features iPad 2

Everyone remembers the iDon't ads Verizon Wireless aired for its DROID handsets. In a refreshing change, the carrier has released an iPad 2 ad that is airing on national TV. The ad focuses on 3G connectivity and all that you can do with an iPad 2 on the "Nation's Largest and Most Reliable Network". If you haven't seen it on TV, you can check out the ad below.

I love my iPad, but I would buy a book at a campsite at night when the screen is readable, and take a photo at the beach when there is enough light to avoid grainy pictures. Why in the world would Verizon promote using the iPad inappropriately, with obviously doctored screen images? They're just asking for product returns.

Interesting points but reading a book at the beach is a more likely and traditional activity than reading while camping.

Yes but you can't really read an iPad at the beach. Backlit color screens of all types really don't do well in direct sunlight. The Kindle ad for reading by poolside unfortunately got it right. You have to buy an anti-glare cover and even then, while inexpensive, aren't readily available in Verizon or Apple stores. So what Alice said is right, in that you inviting returns by people that don't understand basic light principles or haven't had that experience.

I the only thing you could call misleading in an Apple ad is the download time when certain apps were downloaded in the ad. The app download would of course take 1 second to download in an add when at best for most apps it takes more like 30-60 seconds even on decent wi-fi. However it's never been misused in a commercial like it was here.

I really don't think people are going to look into it as granularly as you're making it. Most people don't visit beaches as often to care about direct sunlight on their iPad screen. And if they can't read it, they'll simply either find shade or just put it down. The only way someone is going to return an iPad for this issue is if they specifically bought one to read in direct sunlight on a beach. Thankfully, that isn't likely and there are other uses and places for an iPad.

Wow, you can really see the difference in quality between Apple and Verizon ads when Verizon makes an ad for an Apple product. You can tell Verizon is trying to make an Apple commercial, but it feels a bit off. Maybe it's the mundane guitar licks looping, or the salesman talking through the various shots (with some awkward marketing language), or the anti-climactic "I'll take it" from the lady with giant hoops.

It certainly is all those things but if you compare a traditional Verizon commercial for an Android product and this, the iPad commercial is a lot more engaging and shows off the device itself. No spaceships or sci-fi bullshit. I'd say the quality, at least within the types of Verizon commercials, is higher.
