iPhone ship times start to slip (Updated)

Update: As of this afternoon, the ship times are all back to 1 day. Perhaps the inventory lag was related to weather events or other externalities.

Customers looking to buy an iPhone 4 from Apple's online store will now have to wait 1-3 days for their handset to ship. This lengthened ship time extends to every model of the iPhone 4 that Apple sells. This across-the-board delay may be a sign that iPhone 4 inventory is dwindling as Apple prepares to launch the iPhone 5 in the upcoming weeks.

Rumors suggest the iPhone 5 may have the faster A5 processor like the iPad 2, an 8-megapixel camera and both CDMA and GSM connectivity. It is expected to be announced at Apple's fall event later this month and go on sale sometime in October.

The online store in the U.S. as of this morning says "In Stock" rather than "1 day" as mentioned in the update to the original post. I quickly checked a variety of products from iPad and iPod to AppleTV to MacBook Airs.

Can someone help me understand mobile processors a little more? The Samsung Galaxy SII has an A9 dual core processor. It seems most newer phone, not Apple, are A8 cpus or above. Why does Apple seem to be dwelling on the A5? One glance at Prof. Google and I find threads about how iOS is so efficient is doesn't need a faster processor. I don't buy that at all. All Apple products, non iOS, have leading-edge processors, even for the "world's best OS". That said I find it hard to believe that A5 will be the processor of choice in the new iPhone 5. Some clarification, please?

Never mind. Seems Apple has it's own naming convention (well isn't that special). An Apple A5 is essential an Arm-A9. Does that sound correct?

They use a different name (it would be nice if the naming convention wasn't so similar) because they make some custom modifications to the chip design, but yes, the A5 is based on the A9 architecture just as the A4 was based on the A8 architecture.

I tend to agree with Kelly's thinking on this one.

If Apple is going with a 4s instead of just discounting the 4, then it would make sense that they're slowing down the shipping times due to lower production volumes.

I personally like macfan406's analysis, as well. Clear out the 4/3Gs and step down the product line breadth to the 5/4s. I'd even take it a step further and say that the 4s might replace the iPod Touch. Talk about economies of scale...

As the previous post suggests, most of the shipping times have gone up, better research required!

Pretty much *everything* on the Apple Online Store is showing delayed shipping times right now, which leads me to believe there's either a glitch in the system, or some sort of transport issue getting shipments from China. I don't think we can necessarily assume that this is due to the upcoming iPhone refresh.

What a load of rubbish.... the shipping times dont normally indicate anything. iPad 1 and iPhone 3Gs was not effected before the last launches

Clutching at straws now Kelly....

Probably true, but they won't stop making iPhone 4's anytime soon. Once the next one drops, they'll discount iPhone 4, like the did the 3G and 3GS.

unless they do what the rumors say and introduce a slightly upgraded iPhone 4S, in addition to a complete revamp like the 5. The 4 will still sell, but on clearance for a super low price. I'm guessing this is how it'll break down:
$199/$299 iPhone 5
$99 iPhone 4S
$49 iPhone 4 (while supplies last)
Free on contract 3GS (while supplies last)

The 3GS was not the SAME model they were selling, the RAM was different. A low cost iPhone 4eould probably be limited to 8GB.. But might get a slower A5 since Apple is buying so many? Either way the low cost phone will be a different SKU than current models for sure.
