Bloomberg: Sprint to sell iPhone with unlimited data

A rumor from Bloomberg suggests Sprint will sell the iPhone 5 with an unlimited data plan. The #3 wireless carrier in the US could use this plan to lure customers from competitors AT&T and Verizon Wireless. These two competing carriers already sell the iPhone with tiered data plans. If this rumor pans out, it'll leave T-Mobile as the one remaining US carrier without the iPhone. The absence of the iPhone on T-Mobile may not really matter as AT&T is in the process of buying the #4 wireless carrier.
Sprint, and the other wireless carriers, are expected to sell the iPhone 5 in mid-October. The next generation iPhone will likely be announced at Apple's annual Fall music event a few weeks before it goes on sale.

I'm sure they will, and they'll a magnet for all the right reasons too! Then with that huge cash injection they'll invest in and expand their 4G network. After the first year carrying the iPhone and x-million new subscribers, they'll restructure their data plans.....sound familiar? The only "smart" reason to switch to Sprint this fall would be to get the initial unlimited data and pray to god they honor grandfathering next year! If you are still under unlimited from the other 2, then you'd be a fool to switch, especially considering how far ahead the other 2 are on 4G availability. This is the greatest comment of all time.
September 10 2011 at 2:44 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyCount me in for switching to Sprint. I have an unlimited AT&T grandfathered plan, but can't stand the awful spotty service. I have planned on switching to Verizon when my plan was up even though I would lose my unlimited data, but not it appears I don't have to. Where I live, Sprint and Verizon are essentially equivalent for coverage. It will be a shame in some ways if people don't switch over even if they are grandfathered in because punishing the carriers by leaving is the only way to make them drop their ridiculous data premiums. Text, tethering, MMS. How many different times can they charge you for the same zeros and ones?
September 10 2011 at 1:11 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyoh patience my child, patience. do you think it will never get better? it will, all good things come with time. the future holds great coverage my friend, great coverage. but, if you do switch, then i hope you are in one of the top 5 largest cities in the country, or you'll be praying for that ATT service!
September 10 2011 at 2:45 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI don't think the unlimited data will stick around. The heavy users (users that cost the carriers the most) are the ones who care about this. The low to average data users don't seem to care and are happy paying more with ATT and Verizon. Hopefully this strategy works for sprint because it's good for the user and for competition but corporate greed will eventually win out.
September 09 2011 at 11:54 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWhy does no one report on the $99 price point for this unlimited plan? Its unheard of to pay $99 a month, unlimited or not, unless its 4G... $20 for 2 GB and incurred fees from going over might be cheaper than the $99/month....
Stop being so excited about this when EVERY blog I've read today refuses to report the price.
Im with Michael...Thank you SPrint!!!! I currently have 4 iPhones with AT&T that are grandfathered in! Competition is good!

September 09 2011 at 2:30 PM Report abuse Permalink +1 rate up rate down Replynot likely considering they are also CDMA like verizon, T-mobile if they get the iPhone officially then in theory they should be able to (GSM-ish)
September 10 2011 at 2:50 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyHello, I am from the future. In March 2012, TUAW will post a story titled "Sprint kills unlimited data plans."
September 09 2011 at 1:25 PM Report abuse Permalink +5 rate up rate down ReplyWell, if they grandfather people in, then it's basically a way for everyone to make sure they have unlimited data.

September 10 2011 at 2:51 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThe question here is: Will people who currently have unlimited data on Verizon be forced off unlimited to get the iPhone 5 or not? If they don't have to give up unlimited then I don't see how this would do much for them.
September 09 2011 at 1:15 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI think this will force AT&T and Verizon to keep their unlimited plans grandfathered. Thanks Sprint. I love competition.
September 09 2011 at 1:23 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyneither of these companies give a rats ass about sprint or t-mobile, for obv reasons. did verizons unlimited plan force ATT to keep its?? hey, what's there to keep- they've both already gotten rid of them. Verizon and ATT will have some migration, but they'll market their networks and throw some bones for other things, and count the days until Sprint follows suit. nice pitch about the competition part, but no, that's not how it works in this case.
September 10 2011 at 2:54 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate downas far as competition to create cheaper cell plans, you should thank Apple for iMessage and probably the iPhone 6, TUAW had an article about Jobs' vision of being able to see realtime rates of all carriers and switch between them at will, IE no more contracts, and companies basically price warring each other to get subscribers.
