Starbucks and Apple launch Pick of the Week

Starbucks and Apple are expanding their "Pick of the Week" program to include books, music, apps and videos.

For several years, Starbucks and Apple have offered a "Song Pick of the Week" program. The program offered a free select iTunes music track that was downloadable by any Starbucks customer.

The pair recently expanded the "Pick of the Week" program to include applications such as Shazam Encore. And starting now, the Pick of the Week will include books. The first offering is an extended sample from The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern.

You can snag a copy of this extended book sample by visiting a participating US Starbuck location and redeeming the free Pick of the Week card available at the register.

Well, no you can't find them at your local Starbucks. I've found Shazam in San Marcos, but nowhere in San Antonio has any of these new picks.

At least, at my last check. That's when i found that turning in an empty bag of beans for the "free tall coffee" is not good for iced coffee. Even when the temperature 104.

I have no problem with them offering an extended sample rather than the full book. BUT just say so on the card. Nowhere on the card does it say it is only an extended sample. And even the image they use is of the full book, not the image of the extended sample. It would be like redeeming a card for a free song but getting about two minutes in only to hear a recorded message telling you that you can purchase the whole song if you would like. I don't care if it is a $1.29 song or $12.99 book, just tell me up front what I am really getting.

I really wish they'd use qrcodes or something, typing in those long iTunes codes is such a pain.

Amazon sold Water for Elephants for $1.99, why not a book for free to get people using iBooks?

Then don't pick a $12.99 book to give away...

Besides, there's plenty of people getting something good out of the deal
- Apple gets to promote it's digital downloads
- Starbucks gets cross promotion with Apple
- The Author gets their book exposed to a whole new audience

Trust me... The promotional benefits are well worth the cost of a book (and a lot fewer people will actually download the book than you think... Most people will put it in their pocket and forget about it)

At the very very least they should offer full products, not this "extended sample" crud.

"An extended sample" of a book? Blech. If it's not the entire book, it's useless.

Also, I don't like that the "Pick of the Week" replaces the previous programs. The "Song of the Week" was nice - most of it I didn't like, but it offered music I wouldn't have otherwise listened to. So now they have four different media types and you have to wait an entire month for a new one? I think a lot of people are going to loose interest in the program pretty quickly - it's too varied for such a varied audience. Music is great (and it was great exposure for the artists), but if you mix in books, apps, and videos are PART of the same program (instead of App of the Week, Song of the Week, etc.) you're going to look at it once and forget about it (because the next two/three probably won't interest you - unless you're an Apple geek who's into everything).
