UK's Advertising Standards Authority rules iPhone 4 is thinnest

Apple has gained another victory over Samsung, though this one has nothing to do with patents. The UK's Advertising Standards Authority has ruled that the iPhone 4 is indeed the thinnest smartphone in the country. Apple refers to the iPhone 4 as the "thinnest" smartphone in UK ads. That's something Samsung said was false advertising because their Galaxy S II smartphone is 8.71mm at its thinnest, while Apple's iPhone 4 is 9.3mm at it's thinnest.

However the ASA sided with Apple in the dispute, citing that though the Galaxy S II was indeed thinner than the iPhone at certain points of its body, the Galaxy S II has a hump near its base that measures 9.91mm thick. Both Apple and the ASA believe that a phone's thinness can only be judged by the thickest part of the device.

"Apple pointed out that the Galaxy S II had prominent bulges at the top of the device," the ASA said in its ruling on Wednesday. "Apple said consumers would not be interested in the thinnest part of the device, but in its overall measurements, as these would, for example, affect whether the device could fit into a pocket or purse."

The ASA does a lot of important work, but getting involved in this trivial debate is ridiculous.

It's not how small your device is, but how you use it ;-)

Samsung, that's like Apple saying their device is just as thick as the metal bar surrounding the perimeter of the phone. You would be stupid to measure a device by its thinnest part, and go on thinking that it represents true advertising in itself.

Sorry I gotta say it... with regard to the Samsung "hump".

"Ha ha, dangly parts."

So then I guess most of these new ultrabooks are thinner than the Macbook Air then - if we are measuring by the thickest section. Apple (I believe) stated that the wedge design made the Macbook Air the thinnest on market - but there were others out there who's thickest point was actually thinner than the MBA's.

I don't care about thickness that much, i liked the rounded back (like the original iPhone had). Maybe the new iPhone could have a slightly rounded back, mad out of glass:D (like a crossover between the original iPhone, the 3G and the 4 :P)

Perfect right?

No but seriously, the iPhone 4 feels a bit strange in my pocket, almost sharp. The iPhone 3G was better in that case, but thicker. So a thin iPhone 3G made out of glass casing would be perfect:P
