Dear Aunt TUAW: I just bought an app and then won it
Dear Aunt TUAW,
The good news: I just received an (legit) email saying I won a license for Sparrow!
The bad news: I paid for it LITERALLY 15 minutes ago.
I'm not about to ask for a refund. Oh well. I hope the developer does something great with his cut of my ten bucks.
Thoughts?
Your loving nephew,
Dave

Dear Dave,
If Sparrow was worth supporting before winning a copy, then it was worth supporting after. Don't think about this as having picked up an extra tangible good that you didn't need. Think about it as voting for the app's continued development.
It's seldom considered, but software developers cannot live on rainbows, hugs, and unicorn tears. Money creates the infrastructure that builds the apps you love. Without cash, there can't be software.
By purchasing the app, you're going to help place your vote for keeping it going in the long term -- even if you missed out on a "deal."
Hugs,
Auntie T.

Dear Aunt TUAW,
While I await a reply back on Twitter from the @AppStore account, I was hoping you could possibly help me out more quickly given your past as a ninja and Olympian.
As I try and gift purchases of awesome apps from the App Store to friends, followers, and family, the issue I am hitting is that any of I have already downloaded do not show their price, but instead say "Downloaded. How can I see the prices of these Apps I have already purchased so I can gift them to people and not have the price be a game of Russian Roulette?
Your help or any readers that know the answer to the above would be greatly appreciated and perhaps a small gift code would be sent there way as thanks.
Sincerely,
Part-Time Game Geek
Dear Auntie,,
I know we don't talk as much as we should, what with being on the other side of the big pond, but I've run into a problem and I need your help... We have our own Mac mini server, but I'm having trouble connecting to the shares from that server. You see, somehow, sometime, I think I must have logged onto the server using the sysadmin's credentials, and now every time restart my iMac, the connection to the server is made with those credentials. The problem is that, while I can connect to my personal shares, I cannot access any data (every folder has the no entry badge thingy on it). The only way I can get to my data is to go to Finder (which I normally don't use, you know I'm a big Path Finder fan), click on the server, disconnect then reconnect with my own credentials, and then activate a share in Finder - only then can I open my own shares / data. I had hoped that reinstalling Lion would stop this, but as I had my homefolder on a second partition, as soon as I restored the homefolder the annoying connection problem returned... It is driving me completely nuts.
Can you please help me restore my sanity and help me find the files or settings which would stop (Path) Finder from connecting the sysadmin to the server at bootup? I'm guessing they're somewhere in my homefolder (the Library probably), but for the life of me I cannot find the culprit.
Dear Aunt TUAW,
Prior to Lion, I would run DVD Player full screen on a second display and still be able to use my primary display to do other things. Now DVD Player uses the system-wide Lion full screen mode, which means it only shows on the primary display and the secondary dsiplay is all linen. Is there any way to trick DVD Player into the old way of doing things?
Smooches,
Nephew Ben
Have you considered changing the arrangement of the monitors? You could drag the Finder to the secondary display and run it off that one unless you want the finder on one and the dvd player on the other. Is it just a matter of which screen you prefer or that you want it on the secondary one with the finder on the primary? Hope that makes sense... ;-)

My cousin recently had emergency brain surgery. She's 10 years old, but she can't speak, and she doesn't have very good motor control. She is expected to recover fully, but in the meantime, she can't really do much.
She got an iPad from another relative, and I'm in charge of finding apps for her new toy. Do you or your nieces or nephews have any suggestions? She can read and write, and laugh at funny things still, but she might not be able to draw lines in Spy Mouse or react quickly like in Doodle Jump. Any suggestions would help!
Thanks,
James
Hi James,
Have a look at this: http://hackingautism.org/#/apps
Although it is for children with autism, you'll find for example that BlockCad is freeware for children with limited motor skills. You might also find AAC apps useful.
Sucks you wasted 10 bucks.

September 16 2011 at 3:30 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI'd be happy to trade you that free code, for a free code for GoldenPic by Jebs Apps.
September 16 2011 at 3:28 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyEven better - give the free code you won to someone else! Then you and someone else has the app and it'll help spread the word about how good Sparrow is.
