Square bringing Chrono Trigger, others to iOS (and Android)

The Tokyo Game Show is currently going on in Japan, and here's some news from there that us old school gamers will appreciate: Square Enix is planning on bringing my absolute favorite console RPG ever, Chrono Trigger, over to iOS. Unfortunately, there's not a lot of information on when it'll be out or what's changed from the original (there was a DS version released a few years ago), but I'll wait -- Chrono Trigger is good enough to play through yet again no matter what's different.
There are a few other titles also coming to the iPhone and iPad -- Final Fantasy Legends is on its way over, as is Dragon Quest Monsters. It's unclear exactly what Legends is -- it appears to be a new entry in the mobile realm for the Final Fantasy franchise, and nothing to do with the great old GameBoy game Final Fantasy Legend. Dragon Quest Monsters is of course the spin-off series from Enix's Dragon Quest series, so it'll be nice to have that on Apple's platform as well.
And there's even more -- a card battle game called Diffusion Million Arthur (your guess is as good as ours on that one), a board game called Itadaki Street, and even a card battling game in conjuction with Epic Games (!) called Demon's Source are all due out at some point. Hopefully all of those will eventually land on the iOS store here in North America. That Epic/Square Enix collab especially sounds really interesting.

I hope Dragon Quest Monsters comes to the US

While Chrono Trigger is my all-time favorite RPG, I think I'll stick with emulators. Unless SquareEnix created a 3D port of Chrono Trigger, then I'd be all over that. I can see the FF4 DS version being ported to iPhone, seeing as how it's very similar to FF3 (with a little magic, you can even import the FF4 models from the DS game into FF3 on the iPhone). Now FF6... there's a game I'd love to see a 3D remake of.
Robo out.
This will be another cheap, overpriced port of an existing copy of the game (namely, the DS version). SquareEnix mailed it in for FF Tactics -- the game didn't include multiplayer and was missing various other features seen in the PSP version of the game.
All in all, I have no faith in SquareEnix. We constantly hold out hope that we'll see them produce another FF7, but it's just not happening. They're unable to connect with Western audiences like they did in the 90s and they think they can re-hash old concepts to get by.
Square has done way better before and since FF7.

I mean, I personally think that FFVIII is a "better" game because I disliked the super-deformed look of VII, but I am prepared to accept the overwhelming preponderance of evidence and opinion that FFVII is not just Square's best game ever, but is its best game ever by a considerable and irrefutable margin.
FFVII on iOS would be a huge money maker for Square, and it is baffling that they are not doing it.
How is it that a company that makes a card reader can legally bring these games to iOS?

I pray that is a cheeky comment. Square vs Square Enix nee Squaresoft also known as Square
Totally different Square. I remember a while back thinking, "They're going from making games to making credit card readers?" then realized it was a different company with a similar name.

Square-Enix's pricing has always leaned towards the $8-$18 range per title, per platform (either iPad or iPhone). I'm not one of those people that will buy the game again because I'm a fan of the company or feel like it's earned my money (same reason why I don't feel like owning something like Star Wars for the 5th time).
September 17 2011 at 7:31 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyIf it wasn't a per platform price I'm be more amenable. Especially when their iPad version have historically been little more then slightly reskined iPhone versions. It's what's kept me away from Chaos Rings HD. Now if the HD was an in-app purchase that for a reduced free ($2 to $5 is not unreasonable) I'd be more inclined.
Changes are it will be 20 to 25 dollars, for iPhone and again 1 to 2 months later another 20 to 25 for the iPad "HD" (not HD) reskin.
As much as I love Cronotrigger I'll have to pass until Square-Enix shorts out their pricing. Wish more people would vote with their dollars on this one.
I'm also with jedivulcan on the Star Wars thing. Not interested at all until they put back in the original/cleaned up footage and not the remastered/retconned/tampered footage. When I have kids they're watching Stars Wars IV-VI, then many I-III.
They're announcing this stuff at Tokyo Game Show, so its aimed at the Japanese market and not the US market. So when they announce something as "Final Fantasy Legend(s)" its not referring to the US Game Boy game, because in Japan that game was the first game in the SaGa series and was not in the Final Fantasy franchise of games. But it'll be great to see an original RPG from Square on iOS, hopefully it'll be better than the horrible Chaos Rings.

September 17 2011 at 12:02 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI really hope not either...CT was probably one of my favorite games, period.
September 17 2011 at 1:26 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyDon't worry, they will screw it up with low frame rate, low resolution, and bad UI...
If they do what they did to FF3, then I'd be sold. I'd also become religious.
