Valve offering original Portal for free until September 20

If you haven't played Portal yet, now is your chance. Valve is offering the Mac and PC versions of the 2007 physics-based puzzle game that took the world by storm for free on Steam until September 20.

Valve is giving the game away in honor of its Learn with Portals program. The educational program hopes to leverage the way video games are increasingly playing a role in education by using Portal and Portal 2 to teach physics and critical thinking skills to students. According to Valve:

One of the biggest challenges in teaching science, technology, engineering, and math is capturing the students' imaginations long enough for them to see all of the possibilities that lie ahead.

Using interactive tools like the Portal series to draw them in makes physics, math, logic, spatial reasoning, probability, and problem-solving interesting, cool, and fun which gets us one step closer to our goal-engaged, thoughtful kids!

Education or not, the game is addictive and fun as can be. Be sure to grab it before the 20th while it's still free!

Hat tip to Lex Friedman.

Well I assumed it was free until September 20th, inclusive. Oh well...

If you can't register on your web browser, download the steam client and register from there. Play Portal and then uninstall Steam when you no longer need it. Steam does suck, that is beyond dispute. But I already had it installed on my PC because of Deus Ex (a game) and had no problems downloading Portal.

For all those unable to go past the "account creation failed" message, try with another username, it seems this is the culprit - the username you're trying, even if it shows as available, in fact isn't. Try a more obscure one and maybe it'll work.. it did for me.

Just set up steam and installed Portal without issues. Portal wasn't shown as free until I went to it's homepage. Thanks for the tip!

Steam is ass. Captcha is ass. After 7 attempts to 'enter the characters below' and create a Steam account I'm giving up. Portal probably isn't worth it anyhow.

This is bullshit. You can't just download the game; it's some kind of online launcher that requires you to install a "helper" app.

Ladling crapware onto my computer isn't "free." NOPE.

It's just "free", not "for free." It means free of charge.

This is awesome, I've never played past the demo, and then I completely got over it. I'm actually really excited about this. Makes the fans on my Air go crazy though.

oddly enough i got my copy of portal for free a couple years ago, i learned about the promotion through a blog that used by bargain hunters. i played it once got frustrated, then uninstalled it for space reasons, then got back into it and beat it just before portal 2 came out (which i have yet to play)
