Daily iPhone App: IHeartRadio

Clear Channel is a huge force in radio. When the Telecommunications Act of 1996 opened up radio ownership, Clear Channel Communications scooped up several stations in most big markets, consolidating power.

The company also has a spinoff called Live Nation, which is among the biggest event and ticket promoters in the world (currently in a merger with Ticketmaster). In other words, Clear Channel runs the show when it comes to radio and music events.

And that's essentially why the iHeartRadio app is so important -- it's Clear Channel's official hook into iOS. Most of the company's stations offer live streams within the app, along with song information and other updates. A recent update lets users create custom "stations," similar to Pandora. Unfortunately, those features require a login through Facebook. The service itself isn't bad, but given just how many honeypots Clear Channel has its hands in, some users aren't exactly comfortable with passing over more private information.

That said, if the station you're looking for is available in the app, this is essentially the only way to get it streaming on the iPhone, so this one is pretty much your choice. And there is something to be said for Clear Channel's clout: the company is hosting a huge music festival in Las Vegas later on this month, all centered around this iHeartRadio brand. With the company's access, the custom stations on this app have access to plenty of different music choices and songs you might not hear elsewhere.

It's just too bad the iHeartRadio app is part of the big Clear Channel empire -- something that's crushed a lot of local radio markets (and hearts) in the past. The iHeartRadio app is now available for free in the App Store.

I really like Beautiful Clock Radio much better than iheart, Clear Channel is an evil empire stopping other apps from accessing its stations. Luckily beautiful Clock Radio plays all there stations and more many more!

This repurposing of iheartradio as a Pandora style player is very nice. I'm liking what I hear. My only gripe, and what has kept me away from iheartradio in the past is that Clear Channel blocks my local station from other radio players. This is BAD business. I record a daily three hour radio broadcast on my phone using another app from a station in another city because Clear Channel blocks my local channel unless I use iheartradio. What this means is that all the advertising for the show is from a city hundreds of miles away from my location. Not good for advertisers. But, I really love the new iheartradio for listening to my custom stations.

Clear Channel is not longer connected in any strategic way with Live Nation. Please get your facts straight.

Anyone else having trouble launching this app in iOS beta 7 since they updated the app a week or so ago?

The new update has a license agreement you have to agree to before using, but if I tap "accept", it does nothing.

I've tried force-quitting, as well as deleting and re-downloading the app.

Just love how the USA gets all the media stuff years before the rest of the world. We're still waiting for TiVo in Canada which means I guess I will be able to load this app on my iPhone 12 when it comes out. *Sigh*.

I've been using iHeartRadio for years. I first got it to listen to stations from back home. (Actually, that's still all I use it for.) As it happens, the two stations I wanted to hear are both CC stations, so iHeartRadio does the one thing I want it to. The iPhone app is pretty decent but the iPad app is a mess. There is WAY too much going on and the UI is horrible. For example, when I first launch it and I'm picking from my favorite stations, it shows who and what is playing, rather than which station I'm choosing. And speaking of favorites, when you're listening to a song, the word "Favorites" appears twice as buttons on the screen and they do different things.

Also, iHeartRadio revealed to me a flaw in iOS that hopefully they'll fix someday (though OS X introduced this problem in 10.4 with Spotlight--it WASN'T a problem in 10.3, 10.2, 10.1, 10.0, or OS 9!) The problem is, iOS can't search for strings in the middle of a word! Swipe left until you're at the Search screen. Type in 'heart' and it won't find the app. Type in 'iheart' and BAM--there it is. Lame!
