You're the Pundit: iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, or both?
When it comes to forecasting the next big thing, we turn to our secret weapon: the TUAW braintrust. We put the question to you and let you have your go at it. Today's topic is speculation on whether there will be one or two new iPhones coming soon.
As the beginning of October looms, more and more rumors about the "next thing" are coming out. A lot of the buzz right now seems to be about cases that are appearing. Slashgear has posted several photos (one reproduced below) showing an OtterBox iPhone 4S case that was in an AT&T Store. There are also pictures of a Speck case that was sourced from BGR, although the photo doesn't show anything that states that it is for an iPhone 4S.

Both Wedge Partners analyst Brian Blair (talking to Fox Business) and Greek website Digital Life seem to agree that a new version of the iPhone 4 is more likely to appear in October than the iPhone 5. As reported by Pocket-Lint, the new device would have the same form factor and display as the existing iPhone 4, but would have a modified antenna, possibly more RAM (1 GB?), a higher resolution 8-megapixel camera that will record 1080p video at 30 fps, and a speedier A5 processor.
Earlier in the week, CNET's Josh Lowensohn (quoting J.P. Morgan analyst Mark Moskowitz speaking to Fortune) noted that it's beginning to look like two new iPhone models could arrive this fall -- an iPhone 4 "plus" that is most likely the iPhone 4S and the slimmer world phone iPhone 5.
Those are a lot of sites all pointing towards a possible mix of new iPhones. So what will actually happen in the next few weeks? Do those iPhone 4S cases really mean anything?
You tell us. Place your vote in this poll and then join in the comments with all your predictions.
| We\'re going to see the iPhone 4S in October, but nothing else this year. iPhone 4S *only* announced next month. If Apple were going to ship the iPhone 5, we\'d see those cases too. | |
|---|---|
| Just because we\'re not seeing iPhone 5 cases doesn\'t mean they\'re not out there: both iPhone 4S *and* iPhone 5 announced next month, shipping in 2011. | |
| The game plan looks pretty clear. iPhone 4S in October, and iPhone 5 announced for 2012. That Sprint guy you talked to was right. | |
| Something else. I will tell you in the comments. |

There will be one new iPhone with modest improvements. Of course it will be CDMA/GSM. The Verizon iPhone 4 already has that chip in it, so it's obvious for the new model. LTE will come in fall 2012 when the next major upgrade is released (they would have done that this fall but for the high power draw of LTE chips). In addition, there will be an iPod Touch 3G model released. As far as I am concerned, whether they call the next phone a 4S or a 5 (or something else entirely) is irrelevant.
If the Touch has GPS capability, I will get that. If not, I'll bite the bullet and sign an iPhone contract.
What makes the most sense is for them to refresh the iPhone 4 hardware with a dual CDMA/GSM chip and perhaps a better camera, and faster A5 processor. That becomes a single hardware model that can be sold anywhere and is the new baseline. The iPhone 5 is the new slimmer version that in addition to the above include a larger screen, near-field communication, and higher storage capacity (up to 64GB finally) and of course a higher price.

September 23 2011 at 1:12 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWhat if the iphone 4s replaces the ipod touch. Currently barring 3g and making calls the ipod touch is the cheap iphone. And considering that this is the fall event they could drop a bomb on us.
September 23 2011 at 10:33 AM Report abuse Permalink -1 rate up rate down ReplyI don't see them releasing the iPhone 5 until Q1 2012. I find it hard to believe that Apple would release two similar products at the same time, when they only need the one. Lets face it, any phone that comes out with the word "iPhone" in front of it is going to sell well, regardless of numbers. If Apple releases the iPhone 4s and then the iPhone 5 months later, it will maximize their sales (because believe it or not, people will buy the iPhone 4s and the iPhone 5 on release day). I understand the desire for a cheaper iPhone, but I don't know if Apple does. Anyone that wants an iPhone, will get an iPhone regardless of $100 dollar price difference, or whatever that difference may be. Of course if Apple chooses to release the 4s along with the 5, I don't see the 4s selling all that well. People will just go the extra cash to purchase the iPhone 5 making the iPhone 4s sales very week, and ultimately Apple will learn its lesson and not go this method the next time around. If Apple wants to make more money (and of course they do), they start of trend of doing Annual releases of the iPhones and the iPhone S series, scheduled months apart.

There _is_ a market for a cheaper phone, especially when paired with a low end (limited data) rate plan. I'm guessing that not many who read TUAW are likely purchasers, but this is not the major part of the market :)...
September 23 2011 at 12:58 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyGiven that Apple is NOT going to reveal future products ahead of time, if they release an iPhone 4S and then an iPhone 5 3 months later, they're going to piss a LOT of people off (including myself) who waste a valuable phone upgrade option. I've got a 4 but my wife had an upgrade I used to get it, she got my other 4. I'm waiting with bated breath for the 5, but I'm not sure a 4S will coax me into using my upgrade.

September 23 2011 at 9:45 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down Replyon otterbox.com i went to cases last week and it was clearly labeled "iPhone 5". the company said they would have the cases first thing when the iPhone arrived. today, when i read this story i went back to the website and the section for the iPhone 5 was removed. im thinking otter box got word that there will not be an iPhone 5 an in fact only an iPhone 4S. im not exactly sure though so we will just have to wait :/
September 23 2011 at 9:36 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI think everyone is forgetting that CaseMate accidentally leaked their site for the iPhone 5 case like 2 weeks ago. There are for sure iPhone 5 cases from legit sources popping up on the web.
September 23 2011 at 9:35 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI believe we'll see both form factors. I recently commented that i might have stumbled across a functioning iphone 5 in a coffee shop in south africa. An american couple were snapping away on their "ipod touch" like device next to me at the table. Only difference much bigger screen and incredibly crisp. And of course the tell tale antenna gaps on the side. The device is rediculously thin and has taperred edges. This rang alarm bells as the fitted with the rumours running around. I ask as any friendly local would whether i could take a picture of them together and he almost broke his arm hiding the idevice in his pocket and declining my offer kindly. I waited at the ready to snap a picture of him using it again but he never took it out again. But my litle roswell glimpse has sealed the deal for me. We'll see both in October.
September 23 2011 at 8:50 AM Report abuse Permalink +1 rate up rate down ReplyIf the iPhone 5 dose not come out this year ...i will not be getting the iPhone 4s .. this will be the first time since the iPhone was first announce that i skipped a year..i'm already upset it did not come out in june or july i hope this is not signs of bad things to come now that steve jobs is not CEO...
September 23 2011 at 7:51 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyReally? You need a new phone every year to maintain confidence in the company? My 3G lasted 2 years until I got the 4. Most of us sign 2 year contracts anyway. You don't buy a new TV every year, and we don't buy crap flip phones anymore. Maybe time to adapt to the change in the market?
September 23 2011 at 8:58 AM Report abuse Permalink +1 rate up rate down ReplyWhile I agree that getting a new phone each year is a bit extreme (I was still using my 3G until it crapped out a couple of months ago, and am now waiting for the 5), I can see the point that Apple needs a significant new model on a relatively short cycle (probably no more than 1.5 years, preferably less). This isn't so everyone can buy a new phone each year, but to retain credibility as a/the market leader rather than follower in a market that changes quickly and where the competition (principally Android, and mostly because of their business model) is seen as having more rapid cycles.
