iPhone 4 users begin selling back old units
iPhone 4 owners are starting to sell their used units as Apple prepares to announce its successor. It's a common practice -- sell the "old" tech to help finance the new -- and one Boston-based electronics retailer is already experiencing a significant uptick in smartphone trade-ins and iPhones being offered for sale.
Gazelle's Anthony Scarsella says the current iPhone sell-back is "much more aggressive" than it was when the iPhone 4 was released. Scarsella told The Street that 4,500 people tried to sell their iPhones last week, an increase of nearly 30% from the prior week. If those rates continue, he expects Gazelle to see more than 20,000 customers try to sell iPhones to Gazelle via the web. That would represent 10 times what the company saw with the iPhone 4 transition.
Of course, there are several online vendors willing to buy back your old iPhone. NextWorth is one that I've used, and ReCellular is also offering buy-backs.

Can’t help but give in to the 8 megapixel camera of the new iPhone 4S. I’m ditching my iPhone 3GS 16 GB for $171. I can’t believe that Cash for iPhones is offering me this much considering that my device is OLD. Turns out that iPhones do have a high resale value compared to other smart phones – I’d say it’s worth the money I spent 2 years ago!

I checked out the offers for an iPhone 4 32G Verizon in mint condition and here’s what I got: $268 (Cash for iPhones), $204 (Gazelle) and $250 (Totem). Will definitely sell mine to the actual top bidder. So excited to see how Siri will blow my mind!

As far as selling old ones back, BuyMyTronics.com is really good place to sell your old iPhones (used, new, broken) before heading out to pick up a new iPhone 5. Worth checking out. They have the best BBB rating of all the major players in the industry.

Everyone who has an iPhone 4 is less than two years into their contract, so how do they plan on upgrading without paying full off-contract price for the new iPhone?

Are the people that are selling their iPhone 4 planning to buy the iPhone 5/4S/the new one at full retail? Most people with an iPhone 4 are not eligible for a subsidized upgrade to a new handset.

These people are going to be paying $650 or $750 for their new iPhone which I suppose gets offset a little by selling the old one, but it seems like the most logical thing to do is just buy one every 2 years subsidized with the renewed contract.

However some of us just don't want to be on a contract, and the initial amount paid for the consumer goods (in this case the iPhone) isn't a very significant amount.
From my point of view, its just a very nice cool shiny phone (fashion accessory as my wife puts it). I don't store any significant data or information on these devices. (sadly I use a blackberry for business anyhow *cry*)
Announcing the predecessor? Apple is really serious about this "TimeMachine" thing!

I don't think anyone is selling any iPhone 4 back. To sell something back it would have to be sold to the source you purchased it from. It's also not a trade in to sell an item to another party.
Why do tech writers have such trouble with these concepts?
Well if radioshack does their program again it will be me selling something bac or trading it back in, so it will be accurate.
