You're the Pundit: Last chance to predict the hardware for tomorrow
When it comes to forecasting the next big thing, we turn to our secret weapon: the TUAW braintrust. We put the question to you and let you have your go at it. Today's topic is tomorrow's hardware announcements.
Update: Who won?
| Erica\'s \"One phone to rule them all\" with the iPhone 4S | |
|---|---|
| Doc Rock\'s \"Twins\" with two phones including a Schwartzenegger and a DeVito | |
| Tie | |
| Something else. |
During last night's Talkcast, the TUAW family was split over their predictions. One of us felt that Apple would limit themselves tomorrow to a single iPhone model. Others disagreed. Strongly. Here's how our guesses broke down.
The Lord of the Rings: Erica felt there would be only one phone to rule them all, with more RAM, an A5 chip, better internals and possibly more sensors -- all powering new user features. She didn't care whether it was called a 4S or 5, but felt it likely would follow the current case shape.
Twins: Doc Rock theorized that Apple would introduce two models: a fully powered Schwartzenegger version and a lower-cost DeVito model, offering a bargain-basement intro price. Steve and Kelly jumped on the Twins-scenario bandwagon as well.
Austin Powers: Mike Rose posited that we'd see a variation of the Twins approach, but that the inexpensive mini-me phone (likely an 8GB iPhone 4, an alternative of the DeVito, but not a truly new unit) would be sold out-of contract, as a standalone multi-carrier device at a rock-bottom price.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers: One other theory floated during the talkcast was about the iPod touch. We suggested that Apple might discontinue the iPod touch as we know it and re-introduce it with 3G capabilities, much as the iPad offers. The iPod touch would be taken over and assimilated into the iPhone family in addition to a new 4S or 5.
So those are how our theories broke down according to movie genre. Agree? Disagree? You tell us. Place your vote in this poll and then join in the comments with all your predictions.
| Lord of the Rings: One phone to rule them all | |
|---|---|
| Twins: A Schwartzenegger phone and a DeVito phone | |
| Austin Powers: We\'ve already seen the mini me, but the new one will be tinier and cheaper than the current iPhone 4 | |
| Invasion of the Body Snatchers: The iPod is about to become an iPhone, sort of. And we\'ll see a new phone as well. | |
| Rocky Horror Picture Show: I just like dressing up. I\'ll be wearing blue jeans and a black mock turtle tomorrow. |

the iFridge. A refrigerator that lets you view its contents on an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad
October 04 2011 at 10:45 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWhat I'd like to see: An iPhone 5 with A5 chip, Assistant and higher data speeds and higher camera resolution. It should be able to run iPad apps on its higher-resolution screen and use video-out to be able to function as an enterprise-class workstation, a la the Cisco Cius. A 3rd party can provide a docking station with video, keyboard, mouse, VOIP phone and PC virtualization.
An iPhone 4S should be a cheaper iPhone 4 that takes advantage of iCloud to provide access to more storage than the iPod classic, which would be discontinued along with the Shuffle.
My prediction: Apple will announce they can't get along without Jobs and are shutting down; Cook will be given $25M severance.
OK, seriously, I don't know if it'll be called the 4S or 5, but I think it will be simple: faster guts in the same enclosure, and the iPhone 4 drops to $99. I just hope the base capacity gets bumped again--it doubled every year (4->8->16) except when we went from the 3GS to the 4. I don't think we'll see the WiFi-only iPod touch go away.
No matter what, it will be a) a pretty nice upgrade and b) people will be pissed because it wasn't AMAZING.
PS: Tuaw, please tell your corporate overlords that they're escaping quotes wrong in the poll options. They're littered with backslashes.
How about:
"iPhone Classic" - Looks like an iPod classic with an HDD and rotary dialer where the clickwheel is.
"iPhone Shuffle" - Looks like an iPod shuffle. You can't pick who you call, but you can call a random contact by clicking the button.
Both will be available on the nation's most reliable, fastest growing cellular voice network!
One new phone, the iPhone 4S:
•1GB RAM and A5 dual core processor
•8mpx camera with better sensor - focus is on dim-light photography
•Assistant - revolutionary new feature that drastically improves productivity
•Still only 16GB and 32GB in black and white, but if you buy the 4S you get 2-5GBs free iCloud storage
•Same price
•Possibly a notification light. It would reside it the top right, and would be a small green dot akin to the iSight active light in the Mac line.
•No upgrade to the front camera - we see that in the iPhone VI.
Along with a revised iPhone 4:
•8GB in black or white
•Replaces 3GS as 'cheap iPhone'
•Possible is slightly downgraded to make it cheaper - worse camera or no retina would make sense.
Apart from the expected components that are all but certs (A5 or modified for the TDP of an iPhone etc)
BCM4330 - BT 4.0
Likely BT and maybe wifi in the iPods.
It's like Apple is doing an Intel Tick Tock Strategy. iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS. iPhone 4, iPhone 4GS. Benefits from keeping the manufacturing lines just needing modifying, as they need to make a hell of a lot to meet initial back log of demand.
Also - i'd imagine they'll have an updated GPS also (Broadcom? The Hammerhead 2 has history) - if they're doing geofencing, bringing in GPS more, a better mapping system etc - it'll be nice to have the GPS as less of a battery hog.
The patent on a file to file out a shape of an Apple for an iDevice cover struck me as something that you'd patent if you were wanting to use the material. It was a plastic/carbon fibre mesh. When would cutting with a laser leave "rough edges with fibres" ? Maybe it's just aluminium. They've had previous patents on composite laminates, but this one hinted that they'd got to the stage of patenting how they'd get the Apple logo to work with the material. WIth the issues of the glass back, and the aluminium back - why not?
Bonus ball/Outlier - a use of LiquidMetal
iPhone 4S is only new phone, same GB sizes at same prices, but A5 chip, 1GB of RAM, GSM and CDMA combined (no LTE). 8MP rear camera. Mirroring over HDMI and Airplay. Assistant is "killer" feature including new social media service to find friends. iPhone 4 now starts at 8GB in size with plastic back will be a $99 entry level iPhone-possibly with different polycarbonate color options. iPod Classic and Nano lines removed. iPod Touch will rival iPhone with specs including camera with Flash, and 3G options. Rumored iPhone 5 cases were actually for iPod Touch. Tapered back matches styling of iPad. 128GB is new top limit for iPT.
