8 GB iPhone 3GS now free with contract, iPhone 4 price dropped

With the announcement of the new iPhone 4S today, Apple has also dropped the price on the previous versions of the iPhone. The iPhone 3GS version with 8 GB of memory is now down to the low, low price of absolutely free (as long as you're willing to sign up on a two-year contract with the cellphone service providers), so you've really got no excuse to join the rest of us in the smartphone future.

The iPhone 4 has had a price drop as well -- the 8 GB version is now just $99. Apple's iPhone is cheaper than ever, and while yes, you won't be able to run some of the sexiest new features with these older phones, they're still excellent devices.

What level of contract do you need for the $199 price? Here in NZ monthly contracts go from $40 up to $250 and the subsidy you get depends on how much you're going to pay them every month.

Hopefully AT&T updates their prices soon. If they do, then my teenagers will probably each receive an iPhone4 as one of their Winter Solstice gifts this year.

There is a screengrab from Engadget's blog that shows a 16GB iPhone 4 (not 4s) for 199, but that price doesn't appear anywhere else. Anyone know what gives? Although I don't know why you'd buy a 4 for 199 and not a 4s for 199.

I want to get on the other cycle where i'm getting the redesigned models every other year, but I have a 3GS with a cracked screen now, so I need to do something... Thoughts?

Your wrong on your assumption that we should now, "so you've really got no excuse to join the rest of us in the smartphone future." The plans that the Telco's have are geared towards them, not the end user and until such time that the Telco's realize that it's the end user that is paying the outrageous pricing plans they have and until they change it, we won't be joining the rest of you.

Why do the white iphones have that extra hole above the headphone?
