Looking back at the iPhone 4S pre-order launch

The iPhone 4S online pre-order went live last night, and the experience was hectic for me. Sales started about 40 minutes past the original estimate and customers vented their frustration on Twitter.

Once live, Apple's store site was quickly overwhelmed by customers as was the Apple Store app. Most problems appear to have been had by US AT&T customers -- Verizon customers, for example, and customers outside the United States seem to have made their purchases rather quickly and moved on.

Starting at about 5AM, Apple temporarily switched to a reservation system instead of a purchase system. Apple promised, "We will email you at this address when it's time to complete your order. At that time, you will return to the Apple Store to confirm pricing and plan selection."

Unfortunately, many of those reservation orders encountered snags this morning and customers were directed to complete their purchases at retail Apple stores.

After that, things seem to have smoothed out as many previously-frustrated customers were funneled out of the Apple system. By the time TUAW's Steve Sande woke up a bit after 5AM, everything was, in his words, "roses and unicorn smiles."

For me, personally, my shopping ordeal went on for a couple of hours. Although my heart was set on a 64-GB unlocked GSM world phone, those won't be on sale until November. I settled (though it's hardly settling) for a 32-GB AT&T model, which should provide a good balance of what I need for work vs enough storage space for lots of music, apps and photographs.

Did you participate in the shopping frenzy last night? Share your experience in the comments, and let us know what you bought.

I have managed to pre-order 2 iPhone 4S's with discount for the same number. I pre-ordered through AT&T but then found out you cant get the Applecare+ through them until after September 14th if they are even going to sell it. So I tried to cancel and you have to wait 24 hours. So I checked Apple's website and it was still offering me the discount so I went ahead and ordered another 32GB iPhone 4s with the Applecare+ and it has already been packaged to ship. I called AT&T saturday and was told since I was a "Premier" memeber I had to call another number but only between M-F (wow so premier has more limited phone options). So today I have been trying to call the Premier number but after spending 5 minutes getting through automated prompts I am told that I have an estimated 20 minute wait time. One minute later it tells me that their system is experiencing difficulties and to try back later then hangs up on me. Have tried twice now.

So now I am curious if I will get two phones at the $299 rate or if either AT&T or Apple will charge me the full rate for one of them. If both ship will I be able to return one if I don't activate it? Will I have to pay a restocking fee if I am able to return one?

I did not wait to cancel before pre-ordering another from Apple for good reason I would not have been able to order another for a few weeks. I will never pre-order through AT&T because they simply can't handle it after all these years. I am tempted to cancel both and just switch to a carrier that can handle more. I have so many issues with data speeds, failed called attempts and dropped calls anyway.

Any thoughts?

One problem I ran into is that ATT's web API for verifying account billing password is case sensitive but the ATT website login is not. So I kept getting a bad password message from Apple (and from ATT if I tried to change or delete the darn thing) because I wasn't typing it in with the same capitalization ATT has stored in their system.

It took 3 hours to get through the order process successfully. I woke up to two emails. One saying that I should complete my order, and another saying that my order was invalid and couldn't be completed. Luckily by 7:30-- before I got to class-- I was able to jump on the Apple App and pre order without any trouble. Now all I have left to do is wait.

Hi everyone. I'm in the UK. I rolled out of bed around 9am and logged onto the UK online store around 9:20 and ordered a white 64GB iPhone 4S unlocked with no problems at all from my iPad. Took the payment, chose delivery address and received a confirmation notification via the website. A few hours later I got an email confirming my order will be sent "after the 14th".

Could't be happier really, I was planning to go and get in line but I have important stuff to attend to so will be missing out on that, even though I'd love to go meet some fellow Apple geeks at the store in light of what's happened this week.

Can't wait to get my new phone, I'm curious to know how long after the 14th it will take to arrive but I'm sure all will be fine (touch wood).

I hope everyone else out there manages to get their phone as they wanted and without any issues. Have a great weekend all!

Anyone able to get Applecare+ for their AT&T iPhone 4s? I could not find it when I did the preorder, and Apple's website claims you have to order Applecare+ at the time of purchase of the device. Apple's terms and conditions for Applecare+, however, state you have to purchase Applecare+ within the first year of the device's ownership.

Yes. Appeared as an option while I was ordering mine; added it to the cart at that time.

Once the site was up, I went through the process to reserve my phone (upgrading from a 3G—yeah, I know), but had reservations about committing, as we're on a family plan to save some money, and my dad has a discount as a government employee. So after a while of bouncing back and forth between Apple's and AT&T's sites, I finally was able to figure out what each site was saying, and so I think I got my phone reserved, kept my grandfathered-in unlimited data plan, and even somehow got a service discount applied to that cost. Paid full price on the phone still, but I don't think I'll ever use enough data to be throttled (I rarely bust a 1GB ceiling, let alone 2), so suffice it to say, my option can't be beat.

Of course, by the time I figured everything out and placed my pre-order, it was after 3am local time, so I'm pretty dead at work today. But who cares?

I logged on to the Apple store at 10am PST today and purchased an ATT, white, 32GB, iPhone 4S.

The whole process took 3 minutes from start to finish.

At a little before 8 am EST I went to apple.com/store and placed my order for a 64 GB black AT&T model with no problems. I was grandfathered in on the unlimited data plan (I wish they offered Mobile Hotspot with that plan for a few more dollars!) with a new 2-year commitment. It took a little while (probably half an hour or so) to receive my confirmation email but other than that, it was completely painless.

I woke up at 2 am CST and the Apple store was not working. then I tried the Verizon website and bingo, went through and 20 minutes later got my confirmation and indication that my phone will ship to be delivered on the 14th. IT is my birthday that day so Happy Birthday to me!

I, too, got my confirmation email saying that Verizon would ship my phone to get here on the 14th. Yesterday I checked the order status and it now says it will be shipped on the 21st. I'm not holding my breath on that one, either. LOL and *sigh*
