Unlocked iPhone 4S coming in November, won't work with CDMA

If you were planning to preorder an unlocked iPhone 4S today, you're going to have to wait a little while. The unlocked and contract-free version is available starting in November, with no specific date listed on the Apple website.

There's another bit of a surprise, although it makes sense: the unlocked iPhone 4S won't work on CDMA carriers like Verizon Wireless and Sprint. Why does this make sense? Most of the world currently runs on GSM networks. Even though the iPhone 4S is touted as a "world phone" that can run on both GSM and CDMA networks, most of the people who will use an unlocked, contract-free phone are like world travelers who need the ability to swap a micro-SIM card to get on a new local GSM carrier.

For some reason, Apple is also warning that potential buyers of the unlocked GSM iPhone 4S may require a credit check, and that they must be at least 18 years of age to make their purchase.

The pricing on the contract-free iPhone 4S is fairly steep as well. The 16 GB version starts at US$649, the 32 GB model is $749, and the 64 GB model will retail for $849. The contract-free GSM iPhone 4, which Apple started selling in June of 2011, also sold at similar prices.

Sorry - exactly how does restricting Verizon users from an unlocked version of the phone "Make Sense" ? Its a phone that has CDMA and GSM capability. Why can't Verizon users enjoy Verizon in the USA and the freedom of unlocked GSM networks overseas? That is what would "make sense". Simply put, I guess Verizon wants to force its customers to use their roaming networks instead, and stop people from using local SIMs in other countries. More money for them right?

This sucks so much ... typical apple and providers .... I wanted to use it in the US on Verizon because this is what we use in the Company and then when we travel special in Europe, we would switch to the local sim ... This is false advertisement. Also the article about making sense doesn't make sense at all.

that is exactly how it works. what's NOT unlocked is the CDMA band to use on providers like Virgin USA, Cricket Wireless etc.

I guess one question I have to ask is do Verizon and Sprint allow you currently to bring your own CDMA handset to register with their network?

Verizon yes, sprint no. Sprint has long had a whitelist of every serial (esn) of every phone they sell. The bottom line is if it doesn't say sprint on the phone, they didn't sell it originally, and they will not activate it. (obv apple doesn't allow carriers to put their logos on there, but the principle still stands.)

Verizon will activate any CDMA phone that will work (isn't subsidy locked to someone else) as long as you buy the "required" data plans of course. As long as the phone has GPS, but all CDMA phones have had that since 2004.

This is a false rumor and simple the result of someone not checking the text. If looked at the iPhone 4 page you would realize the text was copied verbatim. Because in the iPhone 4 case this does hold true with the 4S it doesn't

From Apple's site

**iPhone 4**
The unlocked iPhone works only on supported GSM networks, such as AT&T in the U.S. When you travel internationally, you can also use a micro-SIM card from a local GSM carrier. The unlocked iPhone 4 will not work with CDMA carriers such as Verizon Wireless or Sprint.

With the way CDMA works, you would have to get the provider to accept the MEID of the unregistered device. I doubt it is the fault of the phone that it won't work on CDMA, rather the providers not wanting to accept devices they didn't vet themselves. If they started allowing that, the phones on Sprint or Verizon's "Stolen" or "Non-pay" lists could just be taken to the other provider. The real test is seeing if Cricket would accept the MEID of the phone, because that is the only US provider willing to add random MEIDs to their list of approved devices.

That's bogus. They should share blacklists, that wouldn't be hard. Also, Verizon will activate a sprint phone already today, as long as it's not locked to sprint (not all are locked, and they can be unlocked too).

... or if you have Sprint, who has done away with the yearly upgrade discount (as of Oct 2), this is what it will cost you anyway. No prorated or partial discount, like you can get with AT&T or Verizon, for a contract extension. You pay full retail AND get the 2 year extension attached to your account.

I am sure it will work on CDMA, they just aren't advertising it.

Huh? Are they saying that the unlocked phone has no CDMA radio? Or that it's essentially locked to gsm only. Either way this is retarded. Is the Verizon/sprint version going to refuse to work on domestic GSM frequencies, as well, just like all the other crippled "world" phone pieces of crap Verizon has been selling for ages?

We need to just outlaw phone locking for good. Seriously. This is ridiculous.

So if u buy a 4s from AT&T it will be locked to their GSM network. If u get one from Verizon or sprint it will be locked to their CDMA network. If you buy one unlocked it can only be used on a GSM network. Why make a phone with dual radios if you can only ever use on one system. Sure it simplifies the manufacturing but it took some doing to cram both components into the same size phone as before. Another question is if u buy a 4s unlocked from apple is it a different model without the CDMA radio or is the CDMA radio permanently locked. A third option is Verizon and sprint will simply refuse to activate any phone they don't sell. Again it just seems overly complicated. Especially since you can buy a 4s from Verizon sans contract. I assume it's still locked however.
