Cards app is available: Hallmark beware!

The app you've all been anxiously waiting for since the "Let's Talk iPhone" event on October 4th, Cards, is now available as a free download on the App Store.

Cards allows you to create a number of specialized greeting cards ranging from birthday cards to trip post cards. You can add your own photo and words, then buy the card and postage through an in-app purchase. Sending a card in the U.S. costs $2.99, while sending it internationally costs $4.99.

The cards are printed out using the old-fashioned letterpress method, in which the card is imprinted with a debossed design. There are six occasions and 21 designs, the occasions being Thank You, Holiday, New Baby, Birthday, Love, and Travel. In the U.S., your card's envelope includes special Apple-designed postage.

On the day your card is to be delivered, a notification arrives on your iPhone or iPod touch (that's right, it's not available for iPad). Cards should be perfect for those situations where you don't want to have to go to a card store and browse through hundreds of cards. There's no need to hand-scrawl something into the card, then search around for a stamp to send the card.

Check out the gallery below for some screenshots of the app in action.

Will they censor my photos?

In other news...

I'm thankful for this app, since it's outrageous what you have to pay for greeting cards these days. Plus I don't have to wrestle all the other idiots that forgot to get cards until the last minute...

Here's another thing that sucks: While US users pay $2.99 in the US and $4.99 internationally the German version of the Cards app generally charges a minimum of 4.49 Euros ($6.25) for delivery within the same country…! WTF, Apple…?!

Are they using USPS for EU deliveries as well…?!?

Apple isn't going to have a plant in every country of the EU. They're going to have to mail from some place where they have operations like Ireland to Germany, incurring international postage. Looking online, that's about 1.50 Euro, versus ~$.80 for a card in the US. You also have higher VAT tax and higher labor costs than the US.

I guess they didn't think we'd design cards around artwork created on our iPads. How very sad...

No weather&stocks notification widgets for iPad, and also no Cards app. Not to mention no Siri for iPad! And I almost forgot, the location-based reminder option is unavailable for iPad.

These are only the ones I uncovered so far, there are probably a lot more features missing.

What the heck, Apple? IPad users feel left behind. Apple should be aware that we care about software features, too.

Also, there's no multitouch gestures for iPad 1 users, which doesn't make any sense at all -- they used to work just fine before…! :(

And yeah, the fact that I can't even create a location-based reminder on the iPad is a bummer and a real disappointment…! Even those who don't have a 3G enabled iPad could at least sync those with their iPhone…

No gestures for iPad 1? Now that is weird.

You need to download the Cards app from the App Store. Siri is only for the 4S, and they never said it was part of the iOS 5 upgrade. As for Reminders, that is quite odd.

Cards users should also absolutely check out the Postagram app http://www.postagramapp.com This free app takes your photo and turns it into a 4x6 postcard sent anywhere in the world for 99c. And the photo pops out. I'm a bit bias because I made it, but I'd say Apple has good company in us :)

It downloaded fine to my iPad 1 but it is not a universal app and will run in iPhone mode only.
Why they didn't make it universal is beyond my comprehension.

Does iTunes prevent installation on iPad? If not, it should be able to run in iPhone mode.

You can install and run it on the iPad using the 2x button to resize -- but it looks horrible…! :(

I'm confused why this wasn't a universal app. I know the iPad 2 cameras suck, but doesn't mean we wouldn't want to send cards from it. :(

Not sure whether I'm ever going to use it -- but why is this iPhone only and not a universal app for the iPad as well…?! Clearly it would make sense do be able to design your cards on the iPad's larger screen…

Probably because Apple didn't think the iPad's camera was up to snuff. Seems like they're leaving a bit of money on the table, though -- I agree it should have been universal.

I don't even have a camera on my iPad 1 yet I have all my photographs on it and now with Photostream this will be even easier…! There's a gazillion of photo editing apps for the iPad even though most people don't actually take pictures with it…

So that can't or at least shouldn't be a reason for them not to make it universal right from the start…
