Dear Aunt TUAW: Help me iMessage my wife

Dear Aunt TUAW,

One iMessage "feature" is that messaging can be started on one device and picked up from another device, like from iPhone to iPad. My wife and I share an iTunes account so that we don't have to pay for apps twice, or worry about signing into different accounts. Will sharing an iTunes account across two iPhones mess with our ability to text to each other with iMessage? Thanks!

Your loving nephew,

Toby

Dear Toby,

Fear not. Your store account is distinct from your iMessages account. You can create separate Apple IDs for iMessage so you and your wife can pseudo-text back and forth.

You will, however, require two email addresses. Select Settings > Messages > Receive At and create a new Apple ID specific to those addresses.

Hugs,

Auntie T.

Dear Aunt TUAW,

I was so excited to get AppleTv for Christmas but when i turned my big 'ol 61" Sony rear projection tv around to plug in the AppleTv I found that it doesn't have a hdmi input. It has HD input (componant) but not hdmi. So I purchased a converter box to input the hdmi from AppleTv and output to the five component (RCA looking) cable that then connects to the HD input on TV. TV says signal not available? I tried manually changing the output resolution on AppleTv (even though the default is auto) but none of the settings worked. I can hear the AppleTv through the TV as I am using the remote but the screen is black. Is there a different way to get my AppleTv to work on this TV?

Thanks

Ray

Dear Aunt TUAW,

I just bought my first 4S. It's an Apple unlocked version, but I can't get the SIM card I bought here in Brazil (through Claro) to work. Every time I insert the SIM the phone searches for about 3 minutes and then says, "no signal":

Using my co-workers' SIM cards (both Brazilian through Claro/Vivo/Tim/Oi and international through Vodafone, Orange, and Rogers) work fine in my phone.

My SIM card works fine in my co-workers' phones. If it was an issue with cutting my SIM cards, it wouldn't work in anyone's phone...would it?

I'm not getting any "bad SIM', "SIM card failure", "invalid SIM", or "no SIM" error messages. Matter of fact is I'm not getting any error messages at all. I've reset the network settings, done a restore on the phone, and fully restored the phone through iTunes but still no joy.

What can I do? It doesn't seem like the phone is the problem.

I use my iPhone and my iPad. I switch between them often. Is there a simple way to have the message know which device I am using so I can get the iMessage?

HELP Auntie,

I've now got mixed contacts on 2 iPhones, why can't I select one group of contacts for my phone, and another for my Girlfriends?

We use one apple ID for iCloud & purchases and different email addresses for IMessage etc

Please Help x

Paul & Tracey

Don't use one Apple ID for iCloud, you're asking for trouble. Delete all the (mixed up) contacts from iCloud's website if you can (and if you need to, cull out the "wrong" contacts from each person's Mac Address Book on your computers) and then make GF her own Apple ID + iCloud account out of her own email address. You can still have "Your" apple id in her Settings->Store for app purchases (and even for iTunes purchases on the phone, I think). But under Settings->"Mail contacts & calendars" she should have ONLY her own iCloud account. That way she can have her own contacts, calendars, and if she wants, @me.com email address. Sync her iCloud account with her computer and yours again with your computer.

you will still be able to verify the email and this doesn't require a separate account.

Here's a good link to Apple support which expands on all the good information here in the comments http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4895

Dear Aunt Tuaw,

I managed to upgrade to iOS 5 on my iPhone 4 today with no installation issues, huzzah!

However, I went poking around the new features and I noticed that Reminders wasn't showing the option to remind "At a Location". Reminders also isn't showing up in Location Services. I had no issues with GPS in Maps so I know that's working. My friend with an iPhone 4 said it was working fine for him. Am I missing something?

Lost And Utterly Forgetful,
George Henry

Make sure you are not in the completed section of reminders, you will need to be in the "reminders" section. This happened to me too.

I use a very simple trick for my device communication.
If you have a gmail account for example, you can add something to the end of your email.

For example, myemail@gmail.com, myemail+ipad@gmail.com, you will still be able to verify the email and this doesn't require a separate account.

What about iCloud? How does it deal with multiple user accounts?
