Today's Zen moment brought to you by AT&T's iPhone 4S activation (Updated)

A few days ago, we reflected on how a calm and patient attitude could help you weather the crises of iOS 5 and OS X 10.7.2 updates.

The same advice holds true today.

With AT&T and Apple struggling to handle the overwhelming demands, you may experience some delays while trying to activate your iPhone 4S.

We have reached out to both AT&T and Apple for comment, but in the meantime let us suggest that you try again late tonight or tomorrow.

Life is too short to waste on struggling with overloaded servers.

Have some fun instead.

We'll be thinking of you.

Update: TUAW reader Jim P. writes in telling us about a disturbing reaction from his local AT&T Store.

I've owned all the iPhones and this is the first time I've had trouble activating. I've had the 4s for about four hours now. Everybody in the office has gone back to work, all deeply disappointed that the iPhone 4s couldn't be demonstrated. So much for being an early adopter.

Surely AT&T has know for days how many phones it would need to activate today. My AT&T store refused to help me with the activation saying they had word from on high that they couldn't help people who bought their phones through Apple.

AppleCare apologized profusely but was unable to help.

An AT&T spokesman confirmed that this store's response is not AT&T's policy, stating "We provide support to customers who have an AT&T iPhone no matter where they purchased their device."

In regard to activation issues, the spokesman added, "As of 4:30 pm ET today, AT&T had already activated a record number of iPhones on our network – and is on-track to double our previous record for activations on a single day. These record volumes may produce slower activations for some customers, though our systems continue to run at record levels."

Not exactly good news for everyone waiting for activation, but not unexpected either.

Apple has not replied to our request for a statement.

FedEx delivered my two phones around 1pm. I had them both activated In 15 minutes. One of the phones needed to be moved to a different line, necessitating a call to AT&T. I expected the worst, but got a human in 5 minutes and made the move in a few more. Sounds like I was lucky!

Here it is 24+ hours after I received my iPhone 4sand I cannot get anyone to activate it. I'm about ready to throw it the garbage. Last night I was at the AT&T store where I was told because I bought it @ apple.com only apple could help me. The genius at the apple store could not help me the 2 AT&T reps at the pole store tried to help but failed. The folks at 1-800-myiphone have been nice but have not solved the problem. I'm very upset and no info about it makes it frustrating.

My UPS didn't deliver because my school was on holiday. I called UPS a day early and they told me that once the delivery fails, I can pick it up at their building. So I went and they said they wouldn't do anything to help me. Now I have to wait until Monday for it. What's with these iPhones causing everyone to scrap customer service? Completely unacceptable.

I received mine about 1pm EDT. By about 1:45pm I opened the box and plugged it in to charge up all the way. I read the literature and went back to the original email from AT&T. Clicking the link in the email and inputing the order number and activation code failed with "Order number not found". Logged into AT&T website and clicked on support and that portion of their site was down hard. Found an order status online chat and spoke with someone obviously in India who could not assist. Read some blogs in my RSS reader and found advice to try dialing 611 and activate that way. So I joined the phone to WiFI and dialed 611 and followed the automated prompts. It activated in a minute or two. Visual Voicemail didn't work, so I rebooted the iPhone by holding both buttons till the Apple logo appeared. Then it popped up and said the VM password was invalid, so I put my VM password in and now Visual Voicemail worked. I haven't converted to iCloud yet, there were reports that those servers were having issues, likely due to the huge amount of traffic. I'll wait for the data tsunami to subside then I'll finish up.

I just called AT&T because I wasn't even getting prompted for activation. I ordered mine through AT&T so they couldn't use the Apple excuse...but they did. The rep claimed the Apple servers had crashed and that I wouldn't be able to activate for 2 days and to try the process again then! Seriously??

I just called AT&T because I was't getting prompted for activation at all. I ordered mine from AT&T and when I called they said the Apple servers had crashed and I wouldn't be able to activate my phone for 2 days! Not sure if that is just a rep who doesn't want people calling back every hour.

At AT&T incompetence reigns supreme again. They can't do better than the competition so they have to buy it up to eliminate it.

7 hours no luck. All because I bought from apple? If I could I would switch to verizon.

I have a sneaky suspicion users who bought from apple directly are having more activation issues. Maybe they're pushing such customers lower down. Unacceptable.
