Report highlights iPhone 4S design changes

If you think the new iPhone 4S is just the same old iPhone a report in DigiTimes may have you thinking again.

The publication quotes an IHS analysis which looks at some key under-the-hood changes in the new iPhone beyond the obvious faster processor, antenna redesign and addition of the Siri software.

Wayne Lam, a senior IHS analyst says the iPhone camera is a 5 lens system, a first for any smartphone. The new camera is getting raves from users, and comparisons show it's a very high quality implementation for both still photos and high definition video.

The report also praises the fact that the iPhone 4S can operate on multiple carriers using different cellular systems and frequencies. Here in the US, the same phone can work on AT&T, Verizon and Sprint. "No other handset OEM produces a single device for multiple operators and for multiple geographies on this scale."

IHS also highlights other changes to processors and architecture in the iPhone 4S. It adds up to a significantly different user experience that is not obvious when just looking at the new iPhone but pays some big dividends for iPhone 4S owners.

The report didn't really highlight anything, it just mentioned everything everyone already knew. I was expecting to hear that the speaker can now produce a fraction more bass, or the coating on the screen in a fraction of a millimeter thicker. That's highlighting design changes. Saying it has a new processor and is a worldphone... I think that information is on the main Apple page for the product.

Hell, even Apple offered unlocked iPhones 3G/3GS/4 in countries where the legislation demanded unlocked phones. And with unlocked GSM, you know, you pretty much have a world phone, save for 5-or-so CDMA networks worldwide...
I don't really understand why people put up with "locked forever" policies (such as AT&T's). It's your device. After 12-18 months in contract you most probably have matched the subsidised price. How on earth are they entitled to say that you can't use a SIM card from a different provider?

hate to point this out but nokia has made phones in the past that can be used on any cellular service. the issue is whether or not that carrier will let you activate it on their system (verizon, sprint)

That's kinda the point isn't it? If you have a feature that most people can't use because the carriers don't make it possible (i.e. previous iterations of visual voicemail), what's REALLY the value of that feature. There are phones out there with NFC in them - right now. Does that feature actually mean anything at this point.
