Siri is the iPhone 4S' most enticing feature

I could have probably told you this without doing all of the research, but Loopt asked around anyway, and found out that Siri was the iPhone 4S' most exciting new feature for consumers. Sure, that camera is really impressive, and that processor will come in handy when running new games and apps. But 45% of those polled say Siri is the killer app for the new iPhone. And that makes sense -- not only is Siri flashy and new (and available only on the iPhone 4S, for now), but it's pretty much the marquee feature for the device according to Apple's marketing.
And since that feature was only available on the iPhone 4S, then who, do you think, were the most frequent buyers of that new device? Turns out, according to Loopt's fairly informal data, that it was actually iPhone 4 owners. Personally, I usually go for a "leapfrog" system of hardware upgrades (and since I already have an iPhone 4, that leaves me out of this round), but that's probably not the case with most iPhone 4S buyers -- some people just need to have the latest and greatest, so according to this data, most day-one iPhone 4S buyers were standing in line with their iPhone 4s already.
Interesting. This information is all based on "Loopt Qs," which are apparently social questionnaires put on by the mobile social network, so it seems like these answers are self-selected and probably not really representative of anyone but the folks who use Loopt. But nevertheless, the insight that Siri is driving iPhone 4S adoption seems legit enough.

Just got the iPhone 4s. Loving Siri. Really helping me keep organized at work! I've also been using the new iPhone to work on this new website I'm doing: http://www.sirkdigital.com. I can't believe how well the new os works with web developing.

You might say that Siri is the only new feature (compared to the iPhone 4 that is..), but how's that for me in Norway, huh? Not only is Siri not available in my language (and speaking English to my phone all the time might even look more stupid than just talking to my phone in the first place...), but it doesn't even support maps and local search outside the US. Hooray for that.. ( http://www.macstories.net/news/there-are-some-siri-limitations-outside-the-us/ )

How many time does Apple and fanboys have to tell people, stop ragging on SIRI IT IS IN BETA. IF it comes out of beta and does the same things fine rag on it all you want but until then shut the $%^& up because IT IS IN BETA BETA BETA BETA.

October 19 2011 at 1:29 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI've gotta say, i'm a leapfrogger as well - and to some, even leapfrogging could be considered decadent when it comes to buying smartphones. So this means i won't be buying the 4S, but i'll tell you - i'd really love Siri. I'm a regular user of the original Voice Command, so i'm positive i'd take constant advantage of Siri (i'm getting hot).
That being said, it seems a bit out of character (lets call it "cheap", or "lame") to make a new piece of software that could easily run on some of the companies older devices, to be offered exclusively on a new device and be sold as said devices highlight feature. If, in fact, once Siri escapes from beta & is made available to previous generation iPhone users, it'll be odd that Apple milked new customers with a feature that was doled out solely to get their business. & if they keep Siri locked in her golden prison of only 4S & newer devices, it'll seem stingy & unkind to a fanbase who could make use of this wonderful service and so diligently supports the company behind it. This is my gripe. It doesn't feel like a very benevolent, or well thought out play on Apples part, and it's actually the first time i've personally felt they made a greedy move in reaction to their customer base.
just my two cents / sour grapes ; )
You mean it's the only feature

October 18 2011 at 9:56 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyI'll definitely be getting a 4S when my discount kicks in for the processor and camera boost, but I was using my co-workers the other day and just cannot get my head around why people think Siri is even remotely cool. Its so gimmicky. It just a scripted bot! I was also a little dissappointed - although I know the 4S is faster than the 4, you could have handed me one and told me it was a 4 and I would have never noticed the speed difference.
its there, is just not 'wow' - and in some cases, like App Store and settings, I was still frustrated with the load speed.
True - I bought it for siri only I couldnt care wht the iphone camara is as I took good pics from my iphone 4 which were amazing and to be honest whats the real difference in 720p and 1080p but too much but siri was the killer for me...
But apple dont tell you a few things
1. limited connection outside us - I live in england and its crap you cant ask it hardly anything.
2. need faster internet.... ask siri when you only have a few bars of signal and it takes 1 min to answer even with the voice typing takes ages to convert what you say into a text message....
if i knew this before maybe I bought buy it...
and siri needs improvements you can be quick and ask it to type this and 6 - 10 it will get it right but 4 times out of ten it will take you about 5 times longer to do it rather then opening up txt and actually writing it yourself..
I will admit to constantly using Siri. Text messages, reminders, timers and filling in forms that require more than three words. I was able to dictate my home address into Waze (OMG awesome, http://www.waze.com/guided_tour/ just a happy user) using Siri, no mistakes.
I don't say this lightly, but this level of voice recognition in a mobile device, even with the caveat that it is backed up by "the cloud," is revolutionary. I barely need to type anymore. Utterly fabulous. (geez, I'm starting to sound like an Apple keynote here...)
