International unlocked iPhone 4S sales begin today

It's a happy day all over the world today, with a second wave of international iPhone 4S sales starting up. Even better, all of the phones that are going on sale today are unlocked, unlike American compatriots. Who says America is the land of the free?
So where can you pick one up? The new countries are Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. Just visit your favorite carrier and you're free to sign up and begin using your new iPhone 4S.
The pricing on the unlocked iPhones is a bit steep. In Spain, for example, the 16 GB model goes for a cool €600 -- about $850. The 32 and 64 GB models are €700 and €800 respectively. This is a bit more than the unlocked pricing for Canada, which is running between CD$650 and CS$850 depending on which model you purchase. Things are even more expensive in Italy, as you can see in the screenshot at the top of this post.
Still, it's good to see that the iPhone 4S is in distribution in all of these countries and that the supply of the friendly phones (hey, I love Siri...) is in excellent shape. It should be interesting to see if Apple releases sales figures for the iPhone 4S next week after this massive distribution push over the weekend.

Have anyone tried SIRI in Canada? I'm hearing that it's not working very well there as of now. I went on one of the top provider there: http://www.bell.ca/Mobility/Products/Apple_iPhone_4S and it does not put forward SIRI. Isn't SIRI what the iPhone 4S all about? Why would I upgrade then?

October 29 2011 at 9:13 AM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyThe UK had unlocked phones from day 1. Just order them from apple. No subsidy, tho, so a 16GB costs £499 but still - its the same cost as on a contract (up front + monthly * 24months is the same), and I can write it off against my tax like any computer.
America is one of the few countries where you can't get them unlocked AT ALL. Well, you will shortly, but AT&T still requires a 24 contract to even use the phone on its notwork
Why would we pick one up in a different country when it will be sold in the US in a few days for the same price as the canadian iP4s?? And this IS the land of the free, we just have a different market and I'm sure Apple has their reasons to relase it a couple weeks later. It wasn't uncle Sam that prevented it.

Nobody says that anymore. No-one but the US Govt. and about 5 huge multinationals.
I am not sure that the supply is in excellent shape. In the Netherlands shops received one or two iPhones (yes, 1 or 2), if at all. They were sold out after the pre-sale started last week.

October 28 2011 at 3:11 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyWell its because the mobile market is sorta of the exact opposite of free in Europe, theres very heavy regulation here, all carriers have to follow certain rules, use GSM and use certain bands.
And in them rules include unlocked phones, so its free for the people, but not for the carriers.
iPhone 4S has been unlocked since day on in the US. You just need to purchase it a full retail price. When you connect the phone to iTunes for the first time it is automatically unlocked.
