Global BBC iPlayer app will launch for iPhone, iPod touch on Thursday

Sadly, there's still no release date in sight for the global BBC iPlayer in the U.S., but those lucky countries that do have it will have it be expanded to the iPhone and iPod touch on Thursday.

The iPad app launched in 11 countries initially, and the number has expanded to 16 with our Canadian neighbors being the most-recent country to get the player. It's the BBC's foray into a video-on-demand service, geared toward bringing its TV library to international viewers. A subscription nets access to programs ranging from the classic Fawlty Towers to the venerable (and still supremely awesome) Doctor Who.

With the constant additions to the BBC's pilot program, I'm hoping that the U.S. will be on tap to get the app soon.

It's venerable - since when was that a bad thing? It means old and valued! I've been watching it since 1973 and I don't think the new series is a reinvention - the show was constantly changing. It's in its DNA.

I think it might be a while before BBC Global iPlayer comes to United States.
One of giant hurdles for US release is cable companies. For example, Comcast offers most BBC America shows to be streamable via Xfinity app. If BBC World Service wants to charge monthly fees for iPlayer for US users, I think cable companies who have deals BBC be upset, since they would lose cable revenue from BBC America. I think BBC iPlayer for US might be different from other versions around the world, with the fact that you have to have cable subscription.

dr who isn't venerable! it's an amazing re-launch success story. So sure, the firs tseries was in the sixties, but the last 10 years has seen it totally rethought, reimagined and reborn

I would call anyone over 600 years old "venerable" really...

You obviously have no clue when talking about Dr. Who. The show started in the 60's, but ran throughout the 70's and 80's, and even near the early 90's. The relaunch is it's most successful incarnation yet however and is the reason you believe it to be it's only truly successful time. But it's one of the most long lived Sci Fi Shows of the past 50 years.
