Vintage console RPG Chrono Trigger is now on iOS

In addition to all of the other great games that appeared on the App Store last night (Batman: Arkham City Lockdown is available, and the Skyrim Dragon Shout app is out as well), the long-awaited Chrono Trigger has also arrived, and as a game, I have to give it my highest recommendation.

This is one of the best Japanese RPGs ever made, if not the best, and it's a must-play if you haven't yet. The sprites and graphics are gorgeous, the characters are well-defined and the story is intriguing. The combat system does some really fun things that I haven't even seen replicated in other titles since the game came out in 1995. This version includes two additional areas not in the original game; they were added in the Nintendo DS version.

Unfortunately, this one suffers a little bit from the usual problems of porting an old console title to iOS -- the fonts aren't quite right, and the overlay controls, while workable, do cover up some of that gorgeous art. If you want to play it on an actual console, you can find versions on the Wii's Virtual Console and the PlayStation Network, as well as the DS.

But no matter how you play it, don't miss this one if you haven't ever given it a shot -- even years later, the game still shines. It's on the App Store now for $9.99.

This was the game that got hooked me on RPGs back in the 90s. I still have almost every part of the game memorized. The multiple endings and New Game+ feature were relatively new back in the day, and that alone gave this game excellent replay value. If you haven't played the "sequel" Chrono Cross (I say "sequel" because it's not a true sequel, more like a successor), get it too - it's on PSN. Both games are, in my opinion, some of the best RPGs Square ever made. Definitely up there with FF7.

Not sure why they couldn't have just used the old menus and made them touch sensitive.

I really think it would be great if Nintendo jumped on board and started developing for iOS. Just imagine how well the original Mario or Zelda would sell. Or better yet... Super Mario World or Zelda Link to the Past for SNES.

I know Dragonshout is a 3rd Party App, but what Bethesda really should look into is a Books of Skyrim App. I don't know if there is a way to link books stored in the player's homes to a Steam file, and then to an iPad App, but it would be cool if they could. Basically get Steam to sync/push an unlock list of all the different writen material that is in Skyrim to an iPad (or Android) reader App so players can read all this material while away from the computer... or even while setting thier horse to auto-walk and reading with one hand while guiding the horse by mouse with the other.

It could even work mostly on a Kindel Touch as the books are mostly just text. While fans have done a goof job digging though the game files and pulling them out... there is still so much more.

As to CronoTigger... Thank you Square Enix can I have another black eye when you release CronoTigger HD in two months, charge 15 dollars, and don't let me carry over any save data because you've been too arss lazy to find some way to hook the saves to sync with iCloud or OpenFeint. Sorry, but the shenanigans with the Chaos Rings series has put me off your iOS offerings. 1) If an iPad so called HD upgrade didn't cost the price of the game again (was a in App upgrade like Marathon for iPad HD textures). 2) Allowed easier ways to transfer saved game data. I'd be more inclined. I'd take either #1 or #2, both would be preferable but either would do.
