Could DigiTimes rumors affect holiday iPad 2 sales?

Do rumors about Apple products affect your buying habits? Tim Cook thinks so, and so do analysts. A report from Philip Elmer DeWitt of Fortune looks closely at this issue and asks whether the recent iPad 3 rumors from Digitimes will hurt Apple's quarterly iPad 2 sales.

He points to remarks Tim Cook made during Apple's fourth quarter earnings conference call. Specifically, Cook blamed Apple's lower-than-expected Q3 iPhone 4 sales on speculation about the iPhone 4S. Customers, Cook explained, waited to get the iPhone 4S instead of the iPhone 4 because they were aware of its imminent launch.

Now that the iPhone 4S is available, rumors about the iPad 3 are spreading, and the iPad 2 is supposedly feeling the effect. In the past month, Digitimes published several rumors claiming Apple is shifting production from the iPad 2 to the iPad 3. DeWitt cites analysts who are lowering their quarterly iPad 2 sales estimates partially because of sales-busting rumors coming out of Digitimes.

It may seem intuitive to seasoned Apple veterans that the company plans to launch the iPad 3 this spring. The average customer, though, may not be aware of Apple's release schedule and could be influenced when these rumors make it past Digitimes and into bigger publications.

I think folks who always wait for the next thing often miss out... I buy what I want when I need it.

At this point, I would expect a significant number of iPad sales to be holiday-related. Do you delay a holiday purchase for 3-4 months because of a rumor? I wouldn't think so. And I only hear about these rumors because of the apple-related news sources that I follow, so I don't know that an "average customer" is any more likely to follow the Digitimes rumor than they would be to realize that Apple does tend to release new iOS devices annually. Which isn't to say that they would be unaware. The iPhone 4S rumors were largely predictions based on past release schedules, and yet they still are blamed for affecting sales, regardless of what the average consumer knows. If I were in the market for an iPad in February, I'd be tempted to wait. But I don't think anyone is going to use rumors or speculation to justify putting an IOU under the Christmas tree.

These rumors haven't really stopped my wife and I from getting an apple product. I got my iPhone 4 a few months before the 4S came out. But the 4 replaced my 3G and I haven't regretted it at all. And for Christmas we got an iPad 2, which will only get better with use. I know many rumors could be true about the iPad 3, but there will be a few months til it's release. And then it'll only be months til the iPad 4. There'll always be a new one. But I like to appreciate the stuff we have now! And be thankful God provides for the right here and now. Why not enjoy what we have with the time we have left?!

Let's be clear...the first word in Elmer FUD's linkbaiting headline (sadly copied here) was "No..." So it's a non-story over there and should have been a non-story here.

And if TUAW were *really* worried about those who "could be influenced when these rumors make it past Digitimes and into bigger publications" then don't print Digitimes' poorly sourced and mostly frequently incorrect stories. If sites like TUAW practiced more journalistic ethics, Digitimes wouldn't ever be heard from again.
