Microsoft releases SkyDrive for iPhone

Watch out, Dropbox. There's a new kid in town, and he's bigger than you are. Microsoft has just released an iPhone app for access to the free Microsoft SkyDrive cloud storage service. SkyDrive for iPhone (free) should make Windows users who have documents stored in the cloud happy.

Videos or photos that are created on the iPhone can also be uploaded to SkyDrive using the app, which takes up about 4.4 MB on the device. SkyDrive users can access all of their content, including files that someone has shared with them. Likewise, any file can be shared by sending a link via email.

The app also provides a way to create and delete folders from the iPhone. Users of Hotmail, Microsoft Messenger, and Xbox LIVE already have SkyDrive accounts. For those who don't but want to give it a try, you can sign up for a new account at SkyDrive.com.

iUnarchive (not Lite) also connects to SkyDrive and adds the following features:
- native iPad UI
- upload multiple files at once
- preview of a lot more file types
- the option to open a file with another App

Once again microsoft will use its market dominance to offer the market a mediocre product for free and put a great company out of business so that they can lock consumers into all their bloated crapware. And now they are trying to infiltrate the Apple ecosystem to syphon off customers to their BS. More anti-competive behavior from this slug of a company.

So exactly how is this inferior or bloated? They offer 5GB for free rather than the two from Dropbox, and again it's not a sync solution like Dropbox, so I'd even argue it's not a direct competitor. There are a number of us out there who use Windows PC and Microsoft Cloud Services and also own an iPhone. To me this is a company catering to the needs of their users, but maybe your anti-Microsoft bias clouds that.

Do you get upset every time Apple integrates something into iOS that was previously only available via an app?

Okay, this is freaky. Since the recent XBox Dashboard update, Microsoft has put out "XBox Live", "Halo Waypoint", "OneNote" (two versions, iPhone and iPad), "Kinectimals", and now this.

What's making them double down on iOS support like this? Did someone on the Windows Phone 7 team lose a bet?
