Valve debuts free Steam Mobile iPhone app
Valve has released Steam Mobile for iOS, a free app for the iPhone. According to Valve, "With the free Steam app for iOS, you can participate in the Steam community wherever you go. Chat with your Steam friends, browse community groups and user profiles, read the latest gaming news and stay up to date on unbeatable Steam sales."
That's the promise of the app, anyway; Steam Mobile has launched in "limited beta," meaning you first need to input an activation key on your PC or Mac. Entering your username and password into the Steam Mobile app is apparently enough to "express interest" in the beta, but for now that's pretty much all the app does until you receive an activation key.
It's interesting that this app was approved; Apple has traditionally frowned on apps that require users to register for access in this manner, so it's odd to see Valve granted an exception.
Also worth noting is that Steam Mobile will not serve as a front end to Steam selling games for the iPhone. All Steam Mobile will allow you to do is access the community and buy games for your Mac or PC from your iPhone.

BTW, is the store exempted from the "give Apple a 30% cut" because it's not selling "items" for the iOS device it uses?
It's not a cake on a hat, there for it's a lie. Seriously this roll out is more confusing then the number times Half-Life (Episode?) 3 has been delayed. The indication that you have "expressed and interest" in the Beta is so small I missed it three times before going to the Steam Forums and reading a VOLUNTEER moderator's attempt to explain what was going on.
It's like almost every Team Fortress update since Australian Christmas, buggy, haphazard, and confusing as %&$#. I can only hope that is a first step to creating a Steam Layer API for mobile games as Game Center is trash for social communication. Maybe that way we can actually get a system to reliably move saved games between devices, including the Desktop versions. The Steam Layer, while not perfected, is at least a more mature platform.
I can tell you why Valve got a pass for these shenanigans, because they brought "Gaming" back to the Mac. Without SteamPlay and top titles like Left4Dead 2, Portal 2, and Civilization 5, there wouldn't be any attempt to put Mac games into the Mac App store because "no one games on a Mac". Valve brining the Source engine as a 1:1 development environment forced Apple to really look at their drivers on graphics cards and bring them up to par.
