Rumor: iPad 3 case thicker, shows more gradual taper

Chinese tech website M.I.C Gadget gets some amazing spy shots on occasion. This time, they have photos that purport to show the back case of the rumored iPad 3.

As you can see from the photos above, the alleged iPad 3 case (bottom) is slightly thicker than the case of the iPad 2. Although the difference in thickness appears to be significant, another photo (below) shows that the iPad 3 case is actually only about 1 to 1.5 mm thicker.

The site notes that a poster on a Chinese forum has said that the bezel on the new device is narrower, which could be a way to resolve the "light leak" issues that some early owners of the iPad and iPad 2 experienced.

M.I.C Gadget also published a photo of the back case that shows a slightly larger rear camera. That's in line with rumors of an improved iPad 3 camera, although nobody will know the exact specifications of such a device until the new iPad is announced.

The site has a complete "rumor roundup" for your reading enjoyment, but remember that at this point, everything is pure conjecture.

Isnt that logical that they would have two models? iPad 2 and 3 at the same time, so whoever wishes to buy the thinner one would still have the chance to stick with 2. Like the standard iPad 2 and more of a deluxe version iPad 3, just like people have the chance to buy iPod nanos or classic. And besides, its hard for me to believe that theyd really make it thicker.

March 7, if that is indeed the day for the announcement, can't come soon enough for me...

Hmmm. One should note that the glass screen on the iPad 2 sticks out above the bezel by... ready for this? About 1mm.

So, if one were to simply mount the screen flush to the case, you could end up with an iPad 3 that would be exactly the same thickness as the existing iPad 2.

Just a thought.

Thicker? That's very hard to believe and would be a first for any new Apple product. Retina display did not make the iPhone 4 thicker ... I can't think of any reason the iPad might be thicker other than cramming bigger batteries in there.

Hmmm. I'd bet against this rumour, but who knows?

Remember that the iPhone 3G was thicker than the original iPhone to accommodate the 3G+AGPS antenna. Of course they also made the back plastic and curvier to give the impression of thinness.

Aside from powering a retina-display, it's likely to become thicker to add a new LTE 4G antenna.

The first photo which is the only one to show much of an apparent thickness change is due to foreshortening. the iPad on the top is further back on the iPad below making it appear smaller by a simple matter of perspective. You'll note the shadow for the top iPad slightly higher in the lateral plain. This combined with the fact the photo is at a slight downward angle makes the "iPad 3" look bigger.

This might explain the difference in the two apparent thicknesses.

The aluminum also appears to go to the front most edge, whereas the glass on the iPad 2 is on the front most surface. This also leads to the illusion of a thicker "iPad 3"

Making it thicker so they could stick in a larger battery??? What happened to the make-it-thin-at-any-cost Apple I once knew and loved???

(Uh, Apple, if you're listening, that's a joke. Given a choice of something being 1mm thinner, or using the extra space for a larger battery, I'll take the longer battery life every single time.)
