Join TUAW next week from Macworld 2010! Several TUAW team members will be in San Francisco for the biggest expo of the year for the Apple faithful, including David Winograd, Ken Ray, Brett Terpstra, Mike Schramm, Steve Sande, Mike Rose, Dave Caolo and myself. Despite Apple's bailing on the event, the good folks behind Macworld have put together a week's worth of amazing learning and product demos plus talks with Kevin Smith, Guy Kawasaki, Leo Laporte among others.

This year TUAW will have a booth (number 654, come on down and say "Hi!") and we'll be livestreaming video from the show floor. We'll have plenty of hands-on video from the floor and around the show as well, plus our usual stream of posts and galleries. It'll feel like you're there!

We've got a few more surprises in store, so stay tuned for more details on Monday.

By the way, huge thanks to Paul Kent and the folks at IDG World Expo for Macworld and the enthusiastic support of the community at large.

TUAWTUAW is going to Macworld 2010 originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Fri, 05 Feb 2010 23:59:00 EST. Still, threading and a nearly-bottomless cup of storage space made it appealing despite early privacy fears. I use Gmail extensively nowadays, complete with a bunch of tweaks, add-ons and lab components. Problem was, all my old email still lived on my "antique" addresses, and worse, I couldn't access those emails within the handy search tool in Gmail. Google Apps came along and while you could now better control email (using your own domain, for example), the same problem existed: your old email didn't migrate to your Google Apps account.

Enter the Google Email Uploader for Mac. It's a simple tool allowing you to upload your old mail to your Google Apps account. That's it! Apple Mail, Eudora and Thunderbird all seem to be supported, but note there are some real limits if you have a ton of email. Here's what Google says to keep in mind:

Start small. Due to server upload rate limits, the uploader is fast for up to 500 messages, and slow thereafter (1 message per second.) Pick a small subset of your mailboxes when first trying out the uploader.

Be patient. Even after uploading completes, the server requires a while to process uploads.

Do assign a custom label (this is checked by default.) This lets you effectively "undo" the uploads later by deleting all messages with the label. Deleting the label itself will not delete the mail.

If you have many mailboxes in your archives, creating labels for each mailbox probably is not a good idea, as this could create far too many labels.

TUAWGoogle Email Uploader for Mac available now originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Mon, 01 Feb 2010 13:00:00 EST. Unfortunately, just as Apple has done in the past, they have enshrouded the details of developing for the iPad in yet another NDA, preventing developers from discussing the OS outside the highly sanitized Apple forums.

It's possible that Apple will lift the NDA once iPads start flying off the shelves (or cargo containers) in about 60 days, but it is disappointing that developers continue to be hamstrung by what is, frankly, a futile effort to contain SDK details. The idea of an NDA is great, and it is an agreement, but it's not going to deter people from sharing details if they want to send an email or post in a forum. Granted, you won't be developing long if you do this, but doesn't that seem a little ridiculous?

This adversely affects honest developers who wish to share information. Looks like we'll again have to wait for books on development to get the green light once Apple gives their green light. Again.
TUAWiPhone OS 3.2 SDK released, supports iPad but covered by NDA originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Wed, 27 Jan 2010 15:45:00 EST. I don't know if this is a great idea or an invitation to clog up your Twitter feed with inanity (go ahead, hit me with your best shot in the comments on that open invitation), but Tweet Defense takes the usual tower defense game to a new "social" level by upgrading your towers based on how much you tweet. What's the worst that could happen, right? Slidetoplay says it'll debut at $.99, but what price could you put on leveling up via Twitter, really?"
But I'm finding the advertising patents curiouser and curiouser these days. Previously Apple filed a patent on ads that will move themselves around so that they become progressively harder to ignore (yes, this sounds like a usability nightmare). Now, GoRumors reports that Apple has filed a patent for proximity-based ads. So if you happen to be using your iPhone and walking by a store running an ad using this tech, you'll see that ad as you pass by. You've seen Minority Report, right?

What does all this mean? Well considering Apple recently acquired Quattro Wireless, a top company in the mobile ad space, it seems pretty clear that those crazy kids in Cupertino want to chum it up big time with the classy gents of Madison Avenue. That is, Apple is getting into the ad business somehow. My guess is this could be an option for developers. Instead of the algorithms of an AdMob, you would get the most targeted ads ever, really. Or it could simply be yet another patent for us to fuss over that'll come to nothing.
TUAWIs it your imagination or is that ad following you? originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 14 Jan 2010 13:30:00 EST. I say bargain because, as Kara points out, Google paid three times that for AdMob, another mobile ad company. So what? This bit of news, when taken with the ad patent filed by Apple, could suggest they are going to implement some sort of ad system on something. But what? AdMob could be used on Android-powered devices...

How about ads on a tablet device? Ads could help lower the cost of the mythical tablet, especially when those ads are sold by, say, content creators like a newspaper or four. I realize those are a lot of threads to pull together, but all the speculation seems to be swirling around this tablet, the cost and the content that'll go inside. Traditionally cost has been the Achilles' heel for an Apple product, but with ad-supported price breaks you could theoretically lower the cost of the product to the consumer while keeping some margins.

Then again, Apple may simply be planning to integrate Quattro into the developers' toolkits, and provide them with an in-house solution for ad-supported apps. Or maybe they are going to sell an ad-supported OS X for Dell machines. Who knows? As I write this neither company had any comment on the sale or announcement.

UPDATE: Yeah, Apple bought Quattro after all. Let the advertising begin!
TUAWWill Apple buy mobile ad company Quattro Wireless? It wasn't the first book of Erica's I had purchased -- years ago I bought her Desktop Video book -- but it was an excellent introduction into the secret world of iPhone development. If you recall, Apple's cloak of silence (aka the NDA all developers had to agree to) prohibited developers from even talking about how to write programs for the iPhone! Erica, as is her style, was rarin' to go with a book detailing common practices all developers would find useful, especially n00bs like myself.

I should note that InformIT, the publishers, also have sample chapters for a bunch of Mac and iPhone developer books available here.
I wound up using Things every day because, for me, it struck the perfect balance of features and flexibility. Now three lucky winners will get a chance to see the Mac-iPhone sync, the keyboard shortcuts and the excellent tagging features in Things. As you can see in the picture, I keep the Things app [iTunes Link]handy on my iPhone as well -- it is an excellent complement to the desktop application.

Here's a pro tip for Things if you use MailPlane (an excellent Gmail front end for your Mac): Select some text in an email, press Shift-Ctrl-Option-Command-P (yeah, that's a lot of keys) and the HUD will pop up with a link to the email and the selected text in the notes section. As I loathe Mail.app for serious work, this has been a huge productivity booster. Google's task tool simply isn't up to par either.

OK, the rules are the same as always: US-only (sorry, promo code thing), 18 and up, only one entry per person (we'll check!) and three winners. To enter just leave a comment below telling us how you "get things done" right now, and whether or not it's working for you. Good luck!

Open to legal US residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia who are 18 and older.

To enter leave a comment telling us what you use to stay organized/productive and if it works for you.

The comment must be left before Wednesday, December 30, 2009, 11:59PM Eastern Standard Time.

You may enter only once.

Three winners will be selected in a random drawing.

Prizes: One copy of Things for Mac (Value: US$49.95 and one promo code for Things for iPhone ($9.99).

In what may have provided more blog fodder than a golfer hitting a tree, the end may have finally come for the <strike>storied</strike> life of Pystar's Mac clone business. AppleInsider, Gizmodo and The Loop are reporting U.S. District Judge William Alsup just put the smackdown on Psystar's selling of derivative works of OS X, doing anything to circumvent several things -- all of which wind up putting OS X on your non-Apple hardware. Still no ruling on the Rebel EFI software.

Bottom line: Psystar has until December 31, 2009 to stop selling Mac clones forever. Word is they have already started to comply.
TUAWSo long, Psystar - permanent injunction halts Mac clone biz originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Tue, 15 Dec 2009 21:45:00 EST. I remember thinking a store of virtual gifts seemed like a no-brainer, but the in-app purchase block was a show-stopper.

Kisky Netmedia isn't the first company to enable in-app purchases, of course, but Little World Gifts [iTunes Link] is precisely what you'd expect to evolve on the iPhone: a little store of 3D trinkets which you can purchase and share with friends. Little World Gifts (which we covered a few weeks ago) would be relegated to a "gee whiz" factor were it not for the Facebook component. My purchases appear in the Facebook LWG app (as seen in the gallery below) and from there I can share with my friends who also enable the Facebook app. No iPhone required. Uh oh.

The implementation is simple: you see a series of little shelves with little 3D items, and you can buy them. Some are simply 3D objects you can rotate and zoom in a little staging area, while some have associated animations (none that I tested had sound). You will need a network connection to browse this store, as new items may appear periodically. I found the store pretty easy to use, as most in-app purchases tend to be low friction. Viewing an item is a little tricky sometimes, and you have to intuit to double-tap to bring up a "close this view" button, but the models are quite wonderful to behold.

You can send gifts to people via the app or into Facebook, and there's even a tracker to see who has picked up their gift. As I said, this is the practical evolution of virtual gifting on the iPhone, and via Facebook, frankly. I can envision a raft of new, branded stores popping up, too. Perhaps someday your Sims could wear Abercrombie or your virtual villagers in Pocket God could get a dancing Elvis? I'd be happy to ship toxic waste to Farmville.

Currently the gifts on the store are rather limited and have a holiday theme. I'm sure there will be more items to buy as time goes on, but I'd love to see a "real" market a la Second Life, where users could build their own 3D trinkets and sell them on this store. Hey, maybe we could resurrect the 3DMF format? Who threw that virtual tomato?

The Little World Gifts app is free, of course. The gifts normally range from $.99 to $3.99 or more (or less), but for a short time all gifts are only $.99US to celebrate the app's debut.
Here's one: iPoo. In fact, iPoo isn't a terrible app. It features a dashboard of interesting factoids, like "how many gallons are being flushed right now." It also has a virtual bathroom stall interior, for you to indelibly make your clever witticisms while on the can. Plus, you can share the details of each poo in a Twitter-style list, complete with pictures. Thankfully those pics are artist renderings, not camera photos. Now's your chance to pick up those classics for the low, low price of nothing on the iTunes store now. Here's the link to the iTunes store and here's a nifty web-based page to peep the list. About a week ago I walked in to the Apple Store here in Knoxville to meet with an Apple Genius about my iPhone 3GS. It seems my phone was crashing much more than normal -- I logged around 90 crashes in the five months or so that I had the device. I walked out of that Apple Store within about 30 minutes with a shiny-new iPhone 3GS. How did I do this without yelling? Read on.

TIP: Don't take something to the store upon first crash.
I had "put up" with the crashes for a long time. Patience is a virtue, although waiting until your warranty is up is not good. In this case, I had experienced enough crashes across enough updates to indicate the problem might not be the OS itself. Unless your Mac or iPhone is clearly broken, try searching for your issue on the Apple discussion boards and search the support docs for troubleshooting tips. Some basic troubleshooting tips usually include: rebooting, uninstalling/reinstalling, setting up a Guest user account (on Macs) or restoring your iPhone to factory settings.

TIP: See what conditions cause the issue to occur and document or explain those to the Genius.
In my case I "restored" my iPhone (a clever euphemism Apple uses to hide the true meaning: nuke your device back to factory settings) and tried starting from scratch. My frequent crashes and disconnects from iTunes while syncing indicated a hardware issue if the OS wasn't corrupted. So I had to eliminate the OS as a cause by re-installing it.

The problem was, as a factory-fresh install, the iPhone worked fine. So I started adding only content, not apps. Music and videos starting eating up the gigabytes and, sure enough, things started to go horribly wrong. I was able to reproduce the issue only when the device was filled with more than 2GB of data, it seemed. This indicated it was not the sync cable (I had tried several anyway), but possibly the memory in the unit itself.

TIP: Bring any supporting materials with you (error reports, logs, etc.) and explain each issue in detail.
I had the luxury of using Xcode to peep my iPhone's crash logs. You can find these for your Mac in Applications > Utilities > Console, but they are essentially hidden for users on the iPhone unless you are a developer. My crash logs indicated something very, very wrong: the backup tool that runs each time you sync with iTunes was bombing in a bad way, as though I had ripped out the iPhone in the middle of a sync. That again indicated (to me) that there was a bad block of memory somewhere. When the Mac tried to read or write from that block, the OS just freaked out and crashed.

TIP: Try it twice.
I tried restoring my iPhone twice just to make sure I didn't get another corrupted install. It amazes me how computers screw this up, given that they are supposed to be famous for doing the same thing given the same set of instructions, but "things happen" as they say -- give whatever you're doing two chances to make it right. Three strikes if you are generous and have the time. Personally, it was a huge enough pain losing all my preferences and settings and game data the first two times. I felt I had enough info at this point to march into the store with a Genius Bar appointment....

The Genius at my store was impressed with the level of detail I was able to go into, and as a result he was able to simply confirm my findings and provide me with a new phone. It took longer to charge the device (which had been sitting in a drawer for a while) than it did to diagnose.

Be patient, be aware, come prepared -- do those things and your unfortunate trip to the Genius Bar may not be in vain.
TUAWSome tips when visiting the Genius Bar originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 10 Dec 2009 14:00:00 EST. I asked and the developers explained a name kerfuffle that landed the app in limbo until today, as reported by BetaNews. It seems "Edge Games" didn't like the game being called "Edge" and to make a long story short, the same game is now called Edgy. Huzzah!

Edgy is an action puzzler. Some dexterity involved, and you'll be scratching your head as you scoot around an isometric landscape of hazards and obstacles. You play a cube, apparently living life on the edge, constantly in danger of falling off. Edgy is a retro platformer, really, but beautifully rendered on the iPhone with some fun, 8-bit retro audio.

It took a few months and about eight attempts to start enjoying Edgy. It isn't a bad game, but the controls can be tricky. I'm sure that's an appeal for some, but to me it was a turnoff for what I figured would be a very casual game. There are three ways to control your hero cube around a geometric world of right-angles and moving hazards. The three control mechanisms are: touch/swipe to move, tilt to move and use a virtual d-pad of sorts. I preferred the d-pad, honestly. Trying to swipe the cube to make it move was an infinitely frustrating experience and I'm not even sure why it is an option as it barely works at all. Maybe there's a trick to it, but there were no real directions so I've no idea. Tilt to move is fun until you get thrown off the side of your maze a couple dozen times because the accelerometer can be twitchy at times. This leaves the old fashioned "push buttons to move" mechanism we know so well, but it doesn't elevate the game to anything special.

That said, Edgy is well-made and once you get the hang of what's happening is fun. It reminds me of Marble Madness, another geometric landscape featuring a ball instead of a cube. That game took a while to get used to, but once you did, it was mesmerizing. If you like puzzles and retro games you'll enjoy Edgy. And while I'd love to give you an iTunes URL, it appears the app is still not appearing in the US store. Check the official site for info.
In what will no doubt become the top term of 2010, this augmented reality app allows you to track your friends via geolocation of their tweets. If you're into that sort of thing (or have an iPhone 3GS, since AR apps use the compass to position their markers). If the thought of strangers tracking you while you tweet creeps you out (and frankly, it should), rest assured that tracking is opt-in in that you can turn off geotagging for your tweets.

As Fast Company points out, a neat feature is setting your "limit" or range of detection for tracking tweets. You can set this to World and see just how far away everyone is from wherever you happen to be standing. So yeah, pretty soon we'll all be tracking each other all over the place. What could go wrong?

Twitter 360 is currently $2.99US and is from Presselite, the folks who snuck in the first AR app without Apple's detection. Thanks for opening the floodgates! Check out the video of the app in action, below.
Well, here's your iToilet, gang. It doesn't connect to the internet in less than three steps, but it does connect to a series of tubes.

Tipster Mike Jones actually had this made for himself, but through Rival Toilets, makers of custom, printed potties. Yep, the owner of Rival, Fred, has figured out a way to get decals under a coat of specially-formulated finish (a trade secret), resulting in some glorious toilets you see in the gallery. They last, they are custom and they are really quite something to see.

Rival's specialty? Sports team toilets with rival team logos in a "special" place on the bowl. I'm told the Apple version seen here has a similar "rival" logo in the bottom of the bowl. I'll leave the specifics to the reader's imagination. I don't think it's IBM, however.
That's useful if you're going to type and walk around, but the under-the-hood upgrades are worth a mention as well. The biggest update for me was the ability to search contacts. If you have dozens of contacts, being able to search by name is essential; scrolling a huge set of lists is a chore. Searching works great in Agile Messenger, I'm happy to report. Push notifications work exactly as they did before.

There are some cosmetic tweaks and performance tweaks, and I noticed the performance seemed snappier overall. Still, BeeJive recently added (somewhat limited) chat room support, which Agile still lacks. The iPhone IM wars are still on!

Agile Messenger is only $1.99 for the next couple of weeks, which is a steal for the normally $9.99 app. If you use IM a lot, it's a great experience.
TUAWWalk and talk feature added to Agile Messenger for iPhone originally appeared on The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) on Thu, 12 Nov 2009 20:30:00 EST. Yep, the Apple Store is <strike>down (all over, it seems)</strike> and our inboxes runneth over. Don't get too excited, however. This has happened before and will happen again. And again. And again. And again.
If you see anything new when it comes back online, be a dear and leave it in the comments.
