Apple Security update 2008-005 released

Apple has just released a new security update for client and server users of Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) and 10.5 (Leopard). This Security update 2008-005 is "recommended for all users and improves the security of Mac OS X," and includes fixes for a dozen or so features in Mac OS X.

This update fixes a QuickLook bug where loading a malicious Microsoft Office file could lead to "arbitrary code execution." Doesn't sound too good to me! It also fixes a DNS vulnerability that has been highly discussed over the past week (and which many other vendors have already patched).

You can download this update by opening Software Update (Apple menu > Software Update). You can also find more information on what this update fixes by looking at Apple's support note.

Adium X hits 1.0.5

Adium X, my IM app of choice, has released version 1.0.5-- mostly bugfixes, and no major additions to the interface. A bug which deleted chat transcript indexes has been fixed, as well as a crash that was showing up during text-to-speech. And since libpurple was upgraded to 2.0.2, moving ICQ buddies around will go more smoothly, and as the blog says, users who want to add Tlen (a Polish IM service) support to Adium will now be able to do so.

Adium also says this is the last major 1.0 release-- the next planned release will be 1.1, and will drop OS X 10.3 support. Optimizing for 10.4 only, they say, will "bring you more of the shiny." Can't wait to see it.

As usual, you can grab Adium on their site.

Is the firewall enabled in Mac OS X by default, or not?

I just bought a new MacBook, as I'm stepping down from owning a Pro and moving to a MacBook/iMac setup (more on that later), and I noticed something a little disconcerting: after going through the generic setup out of the box, Mac OS X's firewall was not enabled by default. I didn't fiddle with any settings during the initial boot and setup (besides entering a password for my wifi network and my .Mac credentials - about the only settings you can fiddle with), and I spotted this strange quirk in the Sharing Preference Pane when going to name my machine before the initial .Mac sync.

What gives? Is Mac OS X 10.4's firewall enabled by default or not? I honestly don't remember which exact version of 10.4 this MacBook shipped with (I ran Software Update immediately on startup and only caught this firewall quirk after the restart), and I'm certainly not some certified, 6-figure security expert - I'm only reporting what I saw with this initial setup.

So does anyone know what's going on? Discussions about Mac OS X's (and 10.4 specifically) inherent security often cite the firewall being turned on by default - though that clearly wasn't the case with this machine. What say you, TUAW readers?

Apple seeds Mac OS X 10.4.8 to developers

Amidst all this Leopard broohaha, it's good to know Apple can still remember 'the rest of us' still using the now old 'n busted Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger. MacRumors and AppleInsider are reporting that Apple has seeded a Mac OS X 10.4.8 update to developers for their ninja code skills to scrutinize. The fairly hefty list of changes, fixes and improvements includes: AFP Server, WebCore, LoginWindow, CUPS and CDSASSL, and ImageCapture, AFP, DVD Player, Graphics and Graphics applications, iCal, iPhoto, Mail (thank you!), Microsoft Word & OpenType fonts, Modem usage, Networking, Printing, Safari and USB. Also on the checklist are double reboots, long reboots and improving localization in various areas.

MacRumors also notes that this early build tips the scales at 305MB for Intel, and 147MB for PowerPC (10.4.7, by comparison, was 133MB and 64MB), though developer seeds like this typically go on a pretty strict diet before going public.

For now, there's no word or even an ETA on when 10.4.8 might land for the rest of us, so give Apple a break and stop furiously refreshing Software Update, couldya?

Tiger: have you upgraded?

Tiger BoxAs I was walking through the bookstore the other day (yes, I still use paper), I noticed that there were a lot of Tiger books on the shelves. This surprised me for two reasons: 1) The Mac shelves of this particular store are usually pretty poorly stocked, and 2) The public release really wasn't that long ago. In my mind, at least, Tiger is still new, and it doesn't seem like there should be much of a market for so many competing texts yet. I mean, really, how many "average" users run out and upgrade as soon as a new OS ships? I know people who are still running Jaguar.

Then I got to thinking, "maybe it's just me," so I thought I'd do a little unscientific analysis and ask you all:

What version of OS X are you using?
I like shiny things: Tiger.
Panther rocks! (besides, I'm poor).
I've always wanted a Jaguar, and now that I have it, I don't want to give it up (besides, I've been poor for a long time).
10.1: my beige G3 doesn't like where Quartz has headed.
10.0: the CD-ROM on my beige G3 is bronken.
9.2: because it's a "classic"
Darwin
Something else

Will you upgrade to Tiger?
