The iPhone's camera jumping up in the Flickr ratings

This makes sense when you think about it, but it just seems really wild to me: in the list of Flickr's most popular cameras (compiled from the metadata attached to any photos that upload to the popular site), our favorite cell phone is climbing up the ranks. In fact, it had just recently overtaken the Canon EOS 40D digital SLR when the screenshot above was taken (though stats may have changed since then, as now it appears the iPhone never did cross that line).

Obviously, it's not for reasons of quality -- the iPhone's camera doesn't compare in the least to any of the others on that list. But when you consider that the iPhone is now the US's most popular handset, and that there are so many ways to quickly and easily shoot pictures snapped there up to Flickr, it becomes pretty clear why pictures from the iPhone are so popular on the site.

Unfortunately, they don't provide a timeline to these graphs, so we can't really trace the causes of that jump recently, though the App Store probably has something to do with it (doesn't it always?). Another arena where the iPhone is quickly becoming wildly popular.

Apple releases Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update 2.3

Apple just released an update for RAW camera support for Mac OS X Leopard, Aperture 2, and iPhoto '08. With this new update, the following list of RAW-format cameras are supported:
  • Canon EOS 50D
  • Nikon D90
  • Sony DSLR-A900
  • Nikon Coolpix P6000
Apple also notes that this update "addresses issues related to specific cameras and overall stability." You can download this update by opening up Software Update (Apple menu > Software Update) or by downloading the installer package from the Apple Support downloads site.

Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 2.2

Today Apple released an update for Mac OS X's RAW compatibility. iPhoto '08 and Aperture will now be able to work with RAW formats from the following cameras:
  • Canon EOS Digital Rebel XS/Kiss Digital F/1000D
  • Kodak DCS Pro SLR/n
  • Nikon D700
  • Olympus EVOLT E-420
  • Olympus EVOLT E-520
  • Olympus SP-570
  • Samsung GX-10
  • Samsung GX-20
  • Sony DSLR-A300
  • Sony DSC-R1
I'm sure this isn't a fix for everyone, but will probably make most photographers happy to see their camera on the list. You can download this update by opening Software Update (Apple menu > Software Update) or by visiting Apple's downloads website and downloading the installer package.

Apple posts Canon/Brother print driver updates

Yesterday Apple posted Brother Print Driver 1.1. Apple says that the update includes updates for "drivers for printers on your system." Apple also posted an updated for Canon printer users. Canon Print Driver 1.1 provides updates for "drivers for printers on your system."

You can download these updates by opening Software Update (Apple menu > Software Update). Apple also notes that these driver updates will only be available if you have version 1.0 of the drivers installed already, the printer is connected to the computer, and a print queue is created.
