Mac OS X Snow Leopard one step closer to release, now Golden Master

Mac OS X 10.6, AKA Snow Leopard, is one step closer to being released sometime in the next month. Multiple reports indicate that build 10A432 of the new OS has reached Golden Master status, which indicates that all testing has been completed to the satisfaction of the development team.

As we've noted before, Snow Leopard won't introduce many new features. Instead, it's intended to reduce the size of the OS and run much faster on Intel hardware. Snow Leopard will be the first version of Mac OS X that cannot be run on PPC Macs. Amazon.com is already taking pre-orders for Snow Leopard at US$29 for a single-user license or just US$49 for the five-license Family Pack.

The next step is to release the OS to manufacturing, so that the requisite millions of copies can be burned into DVDs prior to the actual release date. When will that actually happen? My personal guess is September 25th, as the last two versions of Mac OS X were released on a Friday (October 26, 2007 for Leopard and April 29, 2005 for Tiger). Of course, Apple could release Snow Leopard on September 15th to rain on Microsoft's release of the Zune HD.

Take our reader poll and give us your best guess for when Snow Leopard will arrive.

iPhone 2.0 firmware release date hidden under our noses

Since its announcement, we've all been speculating about the iPhone 2.0 firmware release date, but Apple has been hiding the date under our noses all along.

"iPhone 2.0 software will be available on July 11 as a free software update via iTunes® 7.7 or later for all iPhone customers," Apple notes in the original iPhone 3G press release (8th paragraph).

Many have told me (3 times 10 times) that this date most likely is a stall date; in other words a "latest possible ship" date for the release. We noted last week that the iPhone 2.0 firmware has already gone gold master (received shipping status); however, we might not see the new firmware until the iPhone 3G is released on July 11th.

Thanks for the tip, Austin!

Amazon presells Leopard, says release 10/07

Reader Elizabeth D sends a note that Amazon.com's Leopard page has been updated (from the sparse set of details that we first saw there). It's now available for presale, as well, and buyers haven't wasted any time-- as of this writing, it is the number one bestseller on the Software list.

Now, Elizabeth noted that the release date was supposedly slated for October 31st, but I don't see that anywhere on the page. As far as I can tell, Amazon is just saying "October 2007." That's not real different from what we've heard before, and between you and me, I wouldn't make any major plans based on Amazon release dates alone. Then again, it's just another brick in the wall of evidence-- the odds are better all the time that we'll see this cat by Halloween.
