Target releases 'Gift Globe' iPhone app

Target has decided to release released its own iPhone application a couple of weeks ago, possibly to encourage holiday shopping online. Stepping beyond the basic web application that Walmart released, the Target application [iTunes link] offers an interesting concept -- like an Urbanspoon for gift ideas.

The idea is to generate gift ideas quickly. First, select the gender and age of your recipient. Then shake the iPhone and the snow globe will display a potential gift. Don't like the recommendation? Shake the iPhone again, and another item will be displayed.

You can tap the item to access actions: add it to your favorites, purchase online, or start your selection over. With the favorites list, you have the ability to create a personalized holiday shopping list that you can carry with you. You can mark off items on the list as you purchase them. The application also allows you to find the nearest Target store.

The Target Gift Globe application can be found in the iTunes App Store for free.

Last day for $$ off iPods at Target.com

If you want to pick up an iPod on the cheap, take the advice of our pals over at dealmac.com and shoot over to Target.com for a deal that expires today: $20 off new Nanos, $30 off iPod touch models. Use coupon code "TCTARGETWELC" to cut the price at checkout.

Having just had the chance to help a colleague set up his new 16 GB touch, I think I might be scootching over to Target myself before the end of the day -- that is, if our household finance manager gives me the high sign.

Target sells a pink Shuffle for Breast Cancer Foundation

Engadget points out that Target is now selling a hot pink iPod shuffle, branded as a Special Edition with a free $15 iTunes gift card, and a portion of the proceeds going to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Pretty good deal, considering the price is the same as all the other shuffles, just $79.

Engadget says the offer is in stores only, and sure enough, while Target's web site has a hot pink shuffle, it doesn't look at all like the same one, and nothing is mentioned about the Foundation. If you've been planning on grabbing a new shuffle, here's the one you want.

Thanks, Chris!

iTunes Store sells three billion songs, keeps on truckin'

After just over four years, the addition of movies and TV shows, and a name change, Apple today announced that the iTunes Store has sold over three billion songs. With a catalog of over five million songs, 550 TV shows and 500 movies, these sales numbers have also propelled the iTunes Store past Amazon and even Target to become the third largest music retailer in the US.

While this is great news and all, I'm getting a bit bothered by the fact that music is gaining more and more of the bragging rights from Apple lately. TV shows seem to be selling pretty well, but just seeing '500 movies' printed in this press release makes the iTunes Store's selection sound like it's about on par with that crappy rental department at that run-down grocery store up the street. Hollywood typically seems happy to hop on any and every bandwagon that rolls into town, and with the reportedly unprecedented profits that record labels and TV show networks make from digital downloads, it still baffles me as to why the iTunes Store isn't able to give Blockbuster and Netflix a run for their money.

Still, three billion songs sold over the world's most popular (and still most DRM-flexible) digital music store is good news, so I tip my hat to Apple on the success of the little jukebox application that could.

Target will sell Apple TV

First it was Best Buy, now AppleInsider is reporting that US retailer Target will become the next third party chain to sell the Apple TV. You can expect to see units in stores by the end of the month (you can currently get one online at Target's website), and a few locations will even feature full-blown demo setups.

It has been reported that Apple TV sales have been a bit slow at Best Buy, so who knows what will happen at Target. Let us know if you see any, especially a demo model.

Target Ticked at Apple/Disney iTunes Deal

The Business section of the CentreDaily reports that Target may pull its Disney-based in-store promotions. In a nutshell, Target doesn't like that Disney is selling movies at the iTunes store for less than it charges brick & mortar retailers. Supposedly Target has already removed displays for Cars. In retaliation, Disney may not ship "Dead Man's Chest" DVDs to Target.

Now, now boys. Can't we just all get along?

As for me, I saw Cars at Walmart for just over 13 bucks and snatched up a copy rather than download the $12.99 version at iTunes, which I'd actually been planning to do. iTunes may cost less, but you don't get that nifty actual disk and all the extras. (Of course, you don't get all the stupid can't-forward-through-the-FBI-warnings either.)

Limited edition iTunes gift cards at Target

Limited edition iTunes Music Store gift cards that you can collect and trade with your friends? That's right, and they're exclusively available at Target. Cards featuring Jewel, Kanye West, James Blunt, Mariah Carey, Hoobastank, Dixie Chicks, and Panic! at the Disco have custom artwork and grant you access to exclusive bonus material. The rest of the 13 cards have custom artwork though, sadly, no super cool extra material.

All the cards come in $15 denominations and are available now.
