iPhone case mod with LED logo

Back in February, we posted a link to a beautiful iPhone case mod that used a matte black TiAIN finish. iPhoneclub community member Jo Croiman has gone in the opposite direction, creating a polished metal beauty complete with LED logo.

The Psycho iPhone Mod, as he calls it, is the result of manufacturing his own rear case pieces, polishing them for hours with a Dremel and affixing LEDs -- taken from another dead iPhone -- underneath a plexiglass logo (the LEDs only pull an additional 50mAh from the battery).

Finally, he sandblasted his own logo into the back of the case. We think it looks fantastic! Great work, Jo.

iBooklet server

How we love enterprising geeks. "This machine isn't dead," they say, "it's prepped for re-purposing!"

Thus was Jonas' thought process (maybe not verbatim) when he came across this 500mhz G3 ibook with a busted display. Other than the screen, the computer functioned perfectly, making it a good server candidate.

He removed the display, optical drive and battery. Next he whittled the case down to the bare minimum that would contain the remaining parts. Finally, he went to a used book store and found a hardcover book that was slightly larger than the resized laptop and cut out all of the pages.

He then used some plastic and velcro to secure the 'book in the book, put it on the shelf and the iBooklet server was born. He claims that there have been no heat issues. Still, I wouldn't go to sleep with that thing running.

Rig of the Week: The ATX G4

This week's rig features one of the best-looking G4s you'll ever see. Enterprising reader :: Jonathan transplanted the guts from his destroyed G4 into an ATX case he had lying around. Sure, the power buttons didn't line up and the had to do some sawing to make the ports accessible, but the important thing is that he saved a Mac. Good job.

Rig of the Day: The black Blue and White G3

While perusing our Flickr pool this morning, we decided, "It's time for a mod post." Behold the Blue and White G3 that's been painted black. It looks pretty good, Geoff.

Order a pre-painted Mac mini case

If you're the instant gratification type who is sick of white, check this out. FastMac is selling Mac mini cases in your choice of seven colors. For $69.95US, they'll send you a pre-painted case and a video that shows you how to swap the painted case for the boring white one that your mini is currently sporting. Once you've made the switch, you send your old white case out to them. I guess it's easier than shipping your computer out for a couple of weeks, but opening a mini isn't for everyone. Let us know if you try this out.

Flickr Find: iPod as an arts and crafts project

Remember all the time you spent making little houses out of Popsicle sticks in elementary school? Flickr user snazzyguy sure does, and in fact he's still putting those skills to use. He put the innards of a dead iPod and a few AA batteries into a custom popsicle stick case, and now he's rockin.

Pretty cool mod, snazzyguy...just get it away from that (very) full glass of water, ok?

iPod meets Geiger Counter

Cue mournful music.

In a post apocalyptic world, all iPods will be rendered useless. Except for this one. Imagine the excitement of being the only person on the planet able to listen to music, all the while being notified of exposure to harmful doses of radiation. Cool!

Seriously, this is one nice mod. Flickr user JavaMoose took a vintage (and still operational) Geiger counter he had lying around (don't we all have these?), gutted it, modded the case and mounted his iPod inside. Next, he altered the original wand to accommodate iPod's wired remote. Very clever. You can check out his step-by-step Flickr set here. Well done.
