Falling in love all over again with the Mac Classic iPhone case

For those of us who are old enough to remember it, the classic "smiling Mac" was the face that first made us fall in love with a boxy little beige computer. Now Colorado designer vanMourik on Etsy.com has created a felt iPhone case that brings back that first love...

Available for only US$25, the Mac Classic iPhone case [link to Etsy] is a handmade work of art. While it's cute enough to grace the purse of a fashionista, it's also cool enough to be found in the cluttered laptop case of any Mac geek. There's even a embroidered Apple rainbow logo!

If some enterprising developer could create an iPhone app to go along with the case that would play the startup beep of the original Mac when the iPhone is removed from it, that would bring tears to the eyes of legions of Mac faithful.

Well done, vanMourik!

Knit Yourself an iPod Sock

Macworld.uk has a sweet little article laying out directions for knitting your own iPod sock. If you have some yarn and needles, you can save yourself £19 and roll your own. The pattern involves nothing more than 30 cast-on stitches in a knit-perl[1]-knit-purl pattern, switching colors after 8 rows to a second color for 34 rows. Even a knitting moron like myself could probably finish this project. If you give it a try, let us know how it turned out for you.

Happy Mac cross stitch

TUAW reader Benjamin White sends in this photo of a cross stitch project he recently crafted. After weighing the merits of OS X and OS 9 art, he decided to go with the OS 9 Happy Mac startup face. The project is about 2-by-3-inches in real life and came out beautifully. White thinks he should have left more white space around the edges of the icon, but I think it looks great. I particularly love the gradation of the shadow under the main unit with the different colors of gray. The Apple logo is just suggestive enough to remind us of what it is supposed to be without going into too much detail. Kudos!

Tip of the Day

To get an instant map to any address, just go to your Address Book and right click on the address field of any one of your contacts and select "Map Of." The address will then be revealed in Google Maps on Safari. You can do the same if a data detector determines there is an address in an e-mail in Mail.
