Road Tested: Mophie Juice Pack Air

iPhone 3G and 3G S owners now have an attractive, lightweight, and functional way to provide extra juice to their power-hungry devices -- the Mophie Juice Pack Air. Available in black, white, and purple, the Juice Pack Air is a slightly more svelte version of Mophie's Juice Pack. Compared to the original Juice Pack, the Juice Pack Air is .1" (2.54 mm) thinner and a full third of an ounce (9.44 grams) lighter.

I had a chance to try out the Juice Pack Air, and my impressions are quite positive, albeit with one exception. Read on for a TUAW road test of Mophie's latest battery pack.

First Look and Giveaway: Equilibrio for iPhone / iPod touch

There's one big problem with being a TUAW blogger -- we are constantly tempted away from doing real work when developers tell us about new and fun software to try out.

That's exactly the problem I ran into when Fishing Cactus asked us to review Equilibrio (click opens iTunes), their new ball puzzle game for iPhone and iPod touch. The app, which is also available for Nintendo Wii, is an addictive game in which you roll balls made of various materials (rock, paper, steel, rubber, and more) around a maze using the iPhone's accelerometers to control where the balls go. You can gain extra points by hitting "coins" and zipping to the end of the maze quickly. There is a conquest mode, where players need to complete a series of levels, as well as a challenge mode. The app is currently available in the App Store for half-price at US$1.99, and there's also a free version -- Equilibrio Lite -- available if you want to try before you buy.

Fishing Cactus has supplied us with 5 promo codes to give away to lucky iPhone / iPod touch owners in the US and Canada. To enter the giveaway, leave us a comment with your idea for a totally different material to make an Equilibrio ball out of.

Here are the rules and a link to the obligatory legal statement:
  • Open to legal US residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia who are 18 and older. (Sorry, we know our international readers want to participate, but promo codes don't transfer outside the US.)
  • To enter leave a comment with an idea for what material you think a Equilibrio ball should be made of.
  • The comment must be left before Thursday, June 12, 05:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time.
  • You may enter only once.
  • Five winners will be selected in a random drawing.
  • Prize: One license each for Equilibrio (US$1.99 value)
  • Click Here for complete Official Rules.
Good luck! And check out the gallery below for some screenshots of this addictive iPhone game.

Win a bundle of iPhone apps in iPhoneSpree, plus 18 apps on TUAW

Similar to MacHeist, which features a bundle of apps by independent Mac developers, iPhoneSpree is giving away bundles of apps -- but you don't have to buy anything to enter. There are 80 levels of winning, with the top 1st-3rd prize winners receiving all 18 apps in the bundle (full list here). You can enter via the website or Twitter, but lucky for you TUAW readers, we're giving away one of the top bundles of 18 right here!

The 18 apps range from toys (iChalky) to top-notch tools (Flight Track Pro) to awesome games (Sway) to just plain interesting (Earth Secrets). Sway is one of my favorite games, iChalky never ceases to delight my kids, Flight Track Pro is the best flight tracker app I've seen and Earth Secrets is like PostSecret.com on the iPhone with all the eye candy of Ocarina.

There's not a bad app in the bunch, so we're thrilled to give these away. Just like the iPhoneSpree, the entry period is open until June 3, 2009. Leave us a comment telling us the one app you'll never delete (ignoring the ones Apple won't let you delete) and we'll pick a winner in the first week of June. Of course, full details on the rules here. Thanks to Visuamobile for the bundle -- we'll sit down with them at WWDC and show their eye-popping portfolio of apps.

  • Open to legal US residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia who are 18 and older.
  • To enter leave a comment with the name of an app you wouldn't delete from your iPhone or iPod touch.
  • The comment must be left before Wednesday, June 3, 11:59 PM Eastern Daylight Time.
  • You may enter only once.
  • One winner will be selected in a random drawing.
  • Prize: promo codes for the 18 apps listed here (total prize value $73.82).
  • Click here for Official Rules.

Bailout America Cash Giveaway

Whether or not you agree with the hotly debated bailout, you may find it hard to say no to cash in your pocket. With this in mind we're letting DoeDoe, makers of the iPhone platformer Bailout America, give you $1,000.

To win, all you have to do is name the 11 10 companies partially shown in the game screenshots. Go through the gallery, then come back to this post and leave your list in the comments. Of course, you could wait for someone else to do it and copy their answers, but where's the fun in that? And how do you know they are right unless you check?

Be sure to check out the full rules on this page, but the usual stuff applies: must be over 18, only enter once, US-only (sorry about that). Remember: leave your list in the comments on this post and we'll randomly select a winner with the correct list. Good luck!

  • Open to legal US residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia who are 18 and older.
  • To enter leave a comment with the names of the 10 companies shown in the gallery attached to this post.
  • The comment must be left before Thursday, April 25, 11:59 PM Eastern Daylight Time.
  • You may enter only once.
  • One winner will be selected in a random drawing.
  • Prize: a check for $1,000.
  • Click here for Official Rules.

First Look: Scannerless scanning with Creaceed Prizmo

Last year I resolved to start keeping track of my business expenses more accurately. I bought NeatReceipts for Mac, but found that even with the diminutive size of the included scanner I didn't want to take it on trips with me. The result? I still ended up with a pile of receipts at the end of each business trip that I needed to scan. What I needed was a scanner that was always with me and didn't take up any additional space in my laptop bag.

Creaceed has come up with a solution in the form of Prizmo, which allows you to use any digital camera -- including the one built into your iPhone -- as a scanner. Once you've taken a picture of any item, you drop it onto Prizmo on your Mac. The application then corrects for lens distortion and perspective, essentially "flattening" the item you're scanning, and provides tools for cropping, changing brightness, and tweaking contrast.

The lens distortion algorithm uses a calibration that is created for specific cameras. As users calibrate their own cameras through a process described in the Prizmo user manual, they can add them to a calibration library that is being created.

TUAW giveaway: WeightBot and ConvertBot

TUAW would like to help take away a bit of the sting of tax week by giving away something for free. That's why we've teamed with Tapbots to give ten lucky US readers licenses for WeightBot and ConvertBot.

Although you'll probably be a lot lighter after the IRS empties your wallet, you may want to lose some weight. That's where WeightBot comes in handy. It's a great-looking and very functional weight tracking app for iPhone that has been featured on TUAW in the past.

Should you decide to skip the country in order to avoid paying taxes [which we do not recommend --Ed.], you might find ConvertBot's ability to convert units of measure and currency to be a big help! If you're not one of the giveaway winners, these apps are available for US$0.99 (ConvertBot) and US$1.99 (WeightBot) respectively.

Tapbots has won accolades for their innovative design of iPhone apps, and we'd like to help them come out with another really cool app. To enter the giveaway, write a comment with your idea for the next Tapbots app.

Here are the rules and a link to the obligatory legal statement:
  • Open to legal US residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia who are 18 and older.
  • To enter leave a comment with an idea for a new Tapbot iPhone app.
  • The comment must be left before Monday, April 13, 05:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time.
  • You may enter only once.
  • Ten winners will be selected in a random drawing.
  • Prize: One license each for ConvertBot and WeightBot (US$3 value)
  • Click Here for complete Official Rules.
Good luck!

It's a wunder-ful day: win a copy of Wunder Radio 1.6

We've had lots of giveaway goodness going on at TUAW lately. We had the MacHeist bundle giveaway, and now we're giving away 20 copies of Wunder Radio 1.6 (click opens iTunes).

Wunder Radio is from the smart folks at Weather Underground, and it's an impressive app for listening to over 30,000 radio stations worldwide. The new version 1.6 has a new, more aesthetic design, and an internal web browser has been added for surfing while you're soaking up the tunes. Wunder Radio is now localized in Spanish, German, Italian, French, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese and Brazilian Portugese.

Despite the global reach of Wunder Radio, our contest is limited to readers from the US (sorry, promo codes only work in the US). Read the rules below for details, and good luck.
  • Open to legal US residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia who are 18 and older.
  • To enter leave a comment telling us which radio station you want to listen to using Wunder Radio.
  • The comment must be left before April 8, 5:00PM Eastern Time.
  • You may enter only once.
  • Twenty winners will be selected in a random drawing.
  • Prize: one license code for Wunder Radio ($5.99 value)

Win one of 25 Macheist bundles

UPDATE: The giveaway is now closed (as are comments). Congrats to the 25 winners, who have been contacted.

Yesterday Macheist raised over $500,000 for charity and unlocked the final two applications in the bundle. Today, from 9am to 5pm EST, you'll have a shot at winning one of 25 bundles. Currently the total bundle value stands at $981 but sells for $39.

In the coming months we'll take a look at each of the programs featured in the bundle, but for now, check out the videos and descriptions on the Macheist website to get a taste of what's included. There's a little something for everyone, especially now that everything has been unlocked.

To enter, you'll need to tell us which application you want the most. Also, once again we'll need to limit the winners to the US and Canada (except Quebec, as our French is really rusty). Comments will close today, April 7 at 5pm on the East Coast, so enter while you can!

TUAW Retro Giveaway Part 2: Manuals, BASIC books and a printer

In the spirit of today's April Fool's/Apple birthday blasts from the past, we've got a giveaway prize pack that will remind us all of days gone by. [Yes, this is an actual giveaway, not a joke. -Ed.]

Wrapping up our look at 33 years of Apple, we're giving away a few more computational artifacts:
Basic Apple BASIC, by James Coan, Fancy AppleSoft Programming by Gabriel Cuellar and 32 BASIC Programs for the Apple Computer by Rugg and Feldman for the old-school programmers out there. If you happen to have a machine to program Applesoft BASIC, why not try GEOS as well? It's an early GUI productivity suite for the Apple II series. We're giving away the entire package: manuals and disks (5.25" of course).

For you Mac folks, there's the ClarisWorks user's guide from 1989, some At Ease manuals and the MacProject II manual.

Finally, there's an Apple Color StyleWriter 2200 in great shape (but no warranty -- there are limits to AppleCare). We'll throw in some ink cartridges, but we've no idea if the ink still works.

  • Open to legal US residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia and Canada (excluding Quebec) who are 18 and older.
  • To enter leave a comment telling us the oldest Apple computer you've ever used.
  • The comment must be left before April 5, 11:59PM Eastern Time.
  • You may enter only once.

(Total estimated value is $100)

TUAW Retro Giveaway Part 1: Newtonian artifacts and the web in '96

In the spirit of today's April Fool's/Apple birthday blasts from the past, we've got a giveaway prize pack that will remind us all of days gone by. [Yes, this is an actual giveaway, not a joke. -Ed.]

Long before there was the iPhone, there was the little PDA that could: the Newton. While it may have sparked mockery and marketplace neglect in its original release, there are still thousands of loyal Newt users (our own Steve Sande among them) who crave the green glow of the touchscreen and the cold, firm feeling of the stylus in their hands.

If you want to join the chorus of Newton owners, here's a unique opportunity: win a mostly-functional (delivered as-is) MessagePad 130 that has been sitting in a box in Mike Rose's office for years now. The left side of the screen is wonky, but other than that it seems to be in working condition. Along with the MP130, you'll get a leather Newton case, a Fodor's 1994 Travel Guide card, a copy of the MessagePad 2000 manual, and a bonus: a copy of the 1996 World Wide Web Yellow Pages. This, friends, is what winning feels like.

See abbreviated rules below, and leave us a comment telling us your favorite Newton memory to enter!
  • Open to legal US residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia and Canada (excluding Quebec) who are 18 and older.
  • To enter leave a comment telling us your favorite Newton memory.
  • The comment must be left before April 5, 11:59PM Eastern Time.
  • You may enter only once.
  • One winner will be selected in a random drawing.
  • Prize: One copy of the MessagePad 2000 Manual, one copy of the 1996 World Wide Web Yellow Pages, one Newton MessagePad 130 with leather case & custom stylus (note: screen is not fully functional, prize delivered as-is), one Fodor's 1994 Travel Guide card for Newton (total value estimated at $100 -- no warranty included).

Win a copy of iPhone In Action and start making iPhone apps

Last month I reviewed iPhone in Action for our TUAW Bookshelf series. Since then iPhone OS 3.0 has been unveiled, and developers have access, but the basics haven't changed. iPhone in Action covers more than the SDK, with the first half of the book dedicated to creating iPhone-tuned websites and web apps. We're giving away two fresh copies of the book this week, and all you have to do is tell us what category of app you'd create: Books, Business, Education, Entertainment, Finance, Games, Healthcare & Fitness, Lifestyle, Medical, Music, Navigation, News, Photography, Productivity, Reference, Social Networking, Sports, Travel, Utilities or Weather.

  • Open to legal US residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia and Canada (excluding Quebec) who are 18 and older.
  • To enter leave a comment telling us what category of iPhone app you'd like to make.
  • The comment must be left before March 27, 11:59PM Eastern Time.
  • You may enter only once.
  • Two winners will be selected in a random drawing.
  • Prize: one copy of iPhone in Action printed book ($39.99).

Win a MovieWedge for your iPhone or iPod touch

Tired of holding your iPhone at just the right angle while on a cross-country trip? Need an easy way to mount the iPhone for casual viewing? We pitted the MovieWedge against the MiniRizer and wound up preferring the MovieWedge for the screen-cleaning surface, portability and design. Now win one of two MovieWedge's this weekend. To enter, just tell us the last video you watched on your iPod touch or iPhone (or anything, really).

  • Open to legal US residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia and Canada (excluding Quebec) who are 18 and older. (Sorry, we know our international readers want to participate, but promo codes don't transfer outside the US.)
  • To enter leave a comment telling us the title of the last movie you watched.
  • The comment must be left before March 22, 11:59PM Eastern Time.
  • You may enter only once.
  • Two winners will be selected in a random drawing.
  • Prize: one MovieWedge bean bag for iPhone/iPod touch ($9.95).
  • Click Here for complete Official Rules.

Win more stuff from TUAW in March

Back in December we gave away several hundred dollars in gear. In January, we went to Macworld and along with our friends at Styleit.tv, we gave away over a thousand bucks of loot. Check out the videos on Justin.tv here and here. Last month we gave away a few things... So starting next week (we had to take a little break), we'll start giving away more stuff again.

In fact, this month you'll have a shot at winning one of two copies of iPhone in Action (reviewed by yours truly here), and one of two MovieWedges (reviewed here), plus the MiniRizer. I've also got a box full of LogMeIn swag (sorry, no licenses or anything, just a bunch of trade show stuff), several more cases in various flavors, and some other doodads. A tweet for a case

We're not sure what someone has been putting in the water lately, but two separate vendors pinged us with case giveaways within minutes of each other. They're both using Twitter as the entry mechanism for the giveaways.

The first giveaway is from our buddies at Evernote, who want you to win one of ten Griffin Clarifi iPhone 3G cases every Friday in March. The Clarifi is pretty sweet, with a built-in closeup lens for taking snaps that are perfect for Evernote. To enter, all you need to do is send a Twitter message containing the #EvernoteClarifiGiveaway hash tag.

Not to be out-cased, RadTech is doing a giveaway of 5 NeoCases. These are sweet form-fitting sleeve cases for MacBooks, iBooks, and PowerBooks. How do you enter? Tweet @radtech with a clever statement including the word "Neocase", and you're entered. The drawing will be held Monday, March 9, 2008, and you'll be able to choose the size of NeoCase for your favorite Mac notebook.

What are you waiting for? Get tweeting and win a case!

MacHeist offers free licenses for DEVONthink via Twitter promotion

MacHeist is calling it a "TweetBlast," we'll call it savvy marketing, but you'll probably just call it "free software, woo!" In an effort to pump up the number of Twitter followers for the MacHeist challenges & software bundle, the team is offering followers (who are willing to post a promotional message) a free license for DEVONthink. The software, normally $50US, allows you to store your files and personal data in lots of structured, tagged and classified ways -- Brett previewed the 2.0 beta in December.

Getting your free copy is pretty straightforward; you'll have to follow the MacHeist Twitter account, and then as noted you're required to tweet a promo message for the TweetBlast itself; not sure whether that's 'recursive advertising,' a recession-buster special or plain ol' viral marketing, but free apps are free apps. When you get DEVONthink, you'll also get Hyperspaces and Overflow as well. Also, participants should know that the DEVONthink licenses are for the soon-to-be-obsoleted 1.x version of the app, but if you want to roll your copy forward to the upcoming 2.0 version you'll be able to do so for the upgrade price of $20.

Full details are at the MacHeist website.

Tip of the Day

Holding the Command key (aka the Apple key) and pressing Tab will cycle through your open applications. It's easier to Cmd-Tab if you are Copy (Cmd-C) and Pasting (Cmd-V) to and from various applications.
