NVIDIA is happy about AMD + ATI merger

FiringSquad, a site covering all things gaming, interviewed Derek Perez, the Director of Public Relations for NVIDIA (ATI's largest competitor), about yesterday's news of the AMD and ATI merger. Mr. Perez looks at the merger as a boost to their own business, excited that NVIDIA will be the only GPU company that supports both AMD and Intel. If this is true, however, this merger could wind up being a bad thing for Mac users as Apple's machines are 100% Intel Inside (yes, I know that slogan is dead now). FiringSquad didn't get much out of Intel, their only comment was basically "we'll get back to you after we're finished reading all this legal mumbo jumbo".

It's still way too early to tell, but I hope this merger doesn't mean that Apple's customers will lose one custom build option in the online store.

AMD acquires ATI for $5.4 billion

AMD, the #2 CPU maker in the world, has announced a purchase of ATI, a leading graphics card manufacturer, for $5.4 billion. IMG has more details on the buyout and the business end of things, but we're more interested in finding out what exactly this means for the Mac market. ATI currently supplies the graphics hardware in a good portion of Apple's machines, including the MacBook Pro I'm typing this on and my wife's iMac, so here's hoping ATI makes enough money from working with Apple to keep AMD - an arch rival to Intel - happy. Stay tuned for more details as they develop.

Adobe sets us straight: GoLive and Freehand are not going anywhere (yet)

Remember that post we had yesterday (ok, fine: I wrote it) that Adobe was giving pink slips to GoLive and Freehand? As it turns out, that might not exactly have been true. Macworld reported last night that a true-blue Adobe rep laid it out on the table: "Adobe plans to continue to support GoLive and Freehand and develop these products based on our customer's needs."

However, another quote doesn't cast any good vibes on the future of these products in the long run: "Clearly Dreamweaver and Illustrator are market leading when it comes to web design/development and vector graphics/illustration... Customers should expect Adobe to concentrate our development efforts around these two products with regards to future innovation and Creative Suite integration".

Take from that what you wish, but it sounds like the GoLive-haters from my previous post and the Freehand-lovers will still have some hatin' and lovin' to do, at least for a little while longer.

Jobs to spend more time at Apple

Steve Jobs told shareholders this week that, in light of Disney's acquisition of Pixar, he would actually be spending more time at Apple, in part because he'll be relinquishing his CEO position at Pixar in a couple of weeks once the merger finishes. Many have been speculating that Mr. Jobs would be spending more time at Disney, but he publicly responded "that couldn't be further from the truth... It'll require less of my time than Pixar did."

This should be good news for anyone concerned about Mr. Jobs' continued involvement with Apple.

Powerlogix bought by OWC

Well I think I found one of the reasons why no one replied to my recent plea for help with my PowerLogix card. It seems that PowerLogix has just been acquired by OWC. Other World Computing is a company that sells a mix of its own gear and  third party hardware (including PowerLogix and other manufacturers). OWC will acquire the "exclusive rights to all PowerLogix proprietary hardware designs and software code, as well as copyrights, logos, brand names, and web domains."

I hope that this means older PowerLogix hardware will continue to be supported after the buy out, if not I am really out of luck.
