Unlockers rejoice: Special deals on early-release iPhones

While supplies last, you can save $20 on refurbished 8GB and 16GB iPod touches and iPhones. These earlier model units are marked as "Original Software Release" and cost slightly less than those already upgraded to current software. Stock has been going in and out all weekend -- so if you don't see units for sale right away, keep checking back. At some point, I'm sure Apple will run out of stock on both touches and iPhones but for now, do try, try again.

Thanks Matt D

Update: TUAW reader Ian seems to have hit the bullseye: 'So this means that although you save $20 on the touch, you have to pay $20 to get the January apps? Isn't that what "original software release" means? '

New US Apple Refurb store debuts

Tonight, Apple debuted its new Refurb storefront, an updated part of the Apple store that allows you to shop for refurbished Macs, iPods and iPhones. New features include a "latest offers" column and a freshened-up overall redesign. So is there anything staggeringly new at this updated store? No, not really. The storefront looks really nice though--and I like that you can see at a glance the new stock as it arrives. Of course, a new-item RSS feed would really rock...

Thanks Tony Pitale

Update: TUAW readers say the Refurb store debuted with the site redesign. Nothing new to see, move along...

iPhone now available as refurb

Did you want to get onto the iPhone train but the $500 pricetag was holding you back? You can now pick up an iPhone for just $399 at the Apple store for the 4GB model. (The 8GB runs $499). The deal includes free shipping, a one-year limited warranty and all the normal iPhone telephone support.

If you're looking to save money on phone plans, it's also a lot easier to do now than it was a month and a half ago: You can use third party programs to activate your iPhone for use without signing up for a phone plan. Other utilities allow you to use prepaid GoPhone cards or other existing AT&T accounts for your phone service. And, of course, you can sign up for the otherwise unadvertised contract-free iPhone GoPhone service at a slightly reduced monthly rate.

Tip of the Day

To get an instant map to any address, just go to your Address Book and right click on the address field of any one of your contacts and select "Map Of." The address will then be revealed in Google Maps on Safari. You can do the same if a data detector determines there is an address in an e-mail in Mail.
