Cheap iPod touches at Woot

Have you been hesitating to buy an iPod touch because they cost too much? Or are you looking for a spare development unit? Or wanna just say "Happy Mother's Day" the right way? Today's Woot/Yahoo deal of the day is selling an iPod Touch for just $225 (including shipping). You can pick up an 8GB iPod touch -- and join that whole iPhone/iPod revolution thing. G'wan. I know you want to. Dump the iPhone-free TUAW feed and become assimilated.

Thanks, TedB.

iPod Minis on sale at Woot

Remember the Mini? If you're in a retro mood today, you can pick a 4GB iPod up at sellout.woot for just $79 + $5 S/H. It's not a bad deal on an outdated iPod. In contrast, new 2GB shuffles are selling at Apple for $69 and refurbs 4GB nanos for $129 (including $15 gift cards). TUAW reader Greg writes that it's the perfect iPod for leaving in the car.

Widget Watch: Woot!

This Lifehacker comment thread made me go researching on what I might use for Webclips, but save for the front page of my favorite blog (TUAW, duh), I couldn't think of anything I'd really want to keep on my Dashboard 24/7. I did like the idea of putting Woot.com (and Shirt.woot, which I've been looking at a lot lately) on there, but as a few of the commenters say, webclipping (can I verb that?) the entire page makes things a little too big.

Fortunately, David Elliot piped up about the Woot.com widget, which easily and quickly lets you monitor the Woot sites from your dashboard, with a minimum of space taken up. And now I've got two instances of it running on my Dashboard, one for regular Woot and one for the Shirt version. I especially like that it includes Growl notification, too -- if I happen to be working around midnight and a really good deal pops up, I won't miss it.

Of course, you may not want to have something popping up on your Dashboard all the time tempting you to spend money. But if you're already following the Woot empire (and to tell the truth, I almost never buy anything-- I just like looking), the widget is an easy and simple way to stay up to date.

Zune on Woot for $20 less, Woot offers rebate (and parody)

Gosh, I love Woot.com. Not only are they based in my original hometown (St. Louis, MO, also home of Fried Ravioli and the Bowling Hall of Fame), and not only do they have some great deals on their site (they sell just one item per day, usually at lower-than-normal prices), but they are insightful and funny people. Take, for example, today's item-- it's a Zune (that non-Apple mp3 player that you may have heard of). When Woot offered the Zune a little while ago, not only did they make headlines, but Apple fans really enjoyed it-- it took Microsoft's mp3 player a full 23 hours to completely sell out, even at the low price of $150.

And now, as reader Jon points out, Woot is giving Apple fans another chuckle. Not only is today's Zune on sale for $130 ($20 less than before-- and it is sold out as of this writing), but their description text is a pitch-perfect parody of another mp3 seller who's had to announce falling prices on one of his products. And they've even offering a coupon back to their previous Zune customers-- as they say, "we want to convincingly pretend to do the right thing for our valued Zune customers."

It's Jobsian parody worthy of Fake Steve. Very nice job, Woot.

Thanks, Jon!

Woot contest gallery: How Apple would re-brand an existing company?

Woot ran a contest last week that asked readers to whip out their Photoshop skills and depict how Apple might re-brand an existing company if they acquired it. The results are in and some of them are amusing enough to share. You can view all the entries in the Woot forums to see which ones didn't make the cut.

My favorite is on the right. Yeah, we all know that Apple hasn't been "Steve & Steve's" for a loooong time now, but I love Ginger Snap-Backs :)

MacUpdate copies Woot clone MacZot

I heard somewhere that there are only something like 30 basic movie plots, and all films are just twists and forks of these original few. Some would say that the same is true for e-business, and they would probably be right. MacUpdate.com has announced a new feature in which a featured piece of software will be heavily discounted and available for only 24 hours. If this concept sounds familiar, it's because it is. The massively successful MacZot got the idea from woot.com, and woot probably found the idea somewhere else.

Because Mac software is a relatively niche market, I see one of two things happening. Either the competition between sites leads to a bidding war to see who can bring in the most dough for the developers, or one of the sites becomes much more popular than the others. Either way, I think the new feature will benefit us end users in the end.

Use Spotlight as a reference tool. Type any word in the Spotlight box and one of the top entries will be a definition. Click on it, and it will bring up the dictionary application to check the word in either the dictionary, thesaurus, Apple database, or Wikipedia.
