Using an iPhone 3G in 2023: A Four-Year User Experience

While many eagerly upgrade to the latest iPhone each year, freelance journalist Robert Falck continues to use his iPhone 3G, a model released back in July 2008. Falck, who acquired his device in January 2009, still finds it perfectly suitable for daily use.

Falck appreciates the ergonomic design of the iPhone 3G, stating, “Despite the more modern aesthetics of recent iPhones, the original rounded back of the iPhone 3G and 3GS feels better in hand and enhances usability.”

He also sees the slower performance of the older model as an unexpected advantage.

“Writing on the iPhone 3G is akin to handwriting with a pen on paper—it encourages careful word selection,” he explains. However, this slow pace can be frustrating when he needs to quickly jot down thoughts or ideas.

Despite the limited number of compatible apps, Falck is satisfied with the functionalities that remain available, such as IP telephony, email, and video streaming.

He likens his iPhone 3G to a PADD from Star Trek, saying, “It makes me feel like I’m part of the future. It’s been four years and I’m still going strong.”
