Apple has introduced a fresh collection of emoji in the fourth developer beta of iOS 26.4. The update includes eight new characters designed to expand the ways users express emotions, ideas, and creativity in messages.

Each symbol offers a different way for users to communicate visually. For example, the Bigfoot emoji may represent mystery or adventure, while the treasure chest can symbolize rewards or hidden surprises.
These additions also follow Apple’s tradition of including both fun and expressive characters.
How Emoji Are Created
Although Apple integrates emoji into its devices, the company does not invent them alone. The Unicode Consortium, a nonprofit organization, manages the official emoji standard used worldwide.
Unicode reviews proposals and selects characters that offer cultural meaning, strong symbolism, and visual uniqueness. According to the consortium, the newest emoji meet these criteria and allow people to communicate in more creative ways.
Once approved, companies such as Apple design their own versions and include them in software updates.
When Users May See the New Emoji
The emoji currently appear only in the developer beta of iOS 26.4. Developers use these early builds to test new features and ensure their apps work correctly before the final release.
Apple usually releases new emoji to the public several months after Unicode announces them. For instance, earlier emoji sets approved in 2024 arrived in the iOS 18.4 update in early 2025.
If testing proceeds smoothly, the new characters should reach iPhone users when Apple releases the public version of iOS 26.4 later this year.
