Apple is getting ready to expand its digital driver’s license feature to another U.S. state. According to information from a source familiar with the plans, Virginia is expected to become the next state to support digital IDs in the Apple Wallet app.
If the rollout moves forward, Virginia will become the 15th U.S. state to offer the feature. Apple already supports digital driver’s licenses and state IDs in 14 states and Puerto Rico.

How the Feature Works
The Apple Wallet ID feature allows users to store a digital version of their driver’s license or state ID on an iPhone or Apple Watch. Users can then present their digital ID at participating airports, businesses, and supported apps.
To set up the feature, users simply open the Wallet app, tap the plus button, choose “Driver’s License and ID Cards,” and follow the instructions. Once Virginia becomes available, residents will be able to select the state from the list and complete the verification process.
Growing List of Supported States
Apple has steadily expanded the service across the United States. States currently supporting the feature include Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, West Virginia, and Arkansas. Puerto Rico also supports the digital ID system.
Virginia’s Department of Motor Vehicles previously indicated that support for Apple Wallet IDs was planned. Although Apple has not announced an official launch date, the feature may arrive in the near future.
Useful but Not a Full Replacement
Digital IDs offer convenience, especially for travelers. Apple Wallet IDs are accepted at TSA checkpoints in hundreds of U.S. airports for domestic travel. However, users still need to carry a physical ID in many situations because digital IDs are not accepted everywhere.
Apple also offers a Digital ID option based on a U.S. passport. This feature can help with identity verification at participating TSA checkpoints, but it does not replace a physical passport for international travel.
As Apple continues expanding its Wallet features, more users may soon leave their physical wallets at home for everyday tasks.
