Apple’s artificial intelligence ambitions reportedly took a major turn after a high-level executive meeting in early 2025. The gathering, held during a period of growing concern over Apple’s AI progress, helped reshape the company’s strategy for Siri and Apple Intelligence.
As competitors rapidly expanded their AI capabilities, Apple found itself under increasing pressure. Delays to Siri’s long-promised upgrades and concerns surrounding the rollout of Apple Intelligence raised questions about the company’s position in the fast-moving AI race. As a result, senior leaders met to determine how Apple should respond.
Leadership Changes Spark a New Direction
The meeting brought together several top executives, including software chief Craig Federighi, former interface design leader Alan Dye, and Vision Pro chief Mike Rockwell. Although CEO Tim Cook did not attend, then-Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams reportedly led the discussion.
During the talks, executives recognized the scale of the challenge facing Apple. Consequently, they explored leadership changes that could accelerate progress. Rockwell emerged as a leading candidate to oversee Siri’s transformation, thanks in part to his role in bringing the Vision Pro headset to market.
Eventually, Apple placed Rockwell in charge of Siri while keeping the project under Federighi’s broader software organization. The decision marked a significant shift in how the company approached its voice assistant and AI efforts.
Building a Stronger AI Foundation
However, Siri was only part of the challenge. Apple also needed stronger AI models to compete with rivals. Therefore, the company searched for additional leadership and later selected Amar Subramanya to help guide AI model development.
At the same time, Apple reportedly explored outside partnerships to speed up progress. Those efforts led to collaboration involving Google’s Gemini technology and cloud infrastructure, which helped support the development of Apple’s next-generation foundation models.
Tim Cook Takes a More Active Role
The AI setback also prompted Tim Cook to become more directly involved than usual. Rather than relying solely on senior managers, Cook reportedly took a hands-on approach to roadmap decisions and encouraged teams to treat AI as a top company priority.
Today, that pivotal 2025 meeting stands as a defining moment in Apple’s AI journey. With major AI announcements expected at WWDC, the company now hopes its strategic reset will help Siri and Apple Intelligence regain momentum in an increasingly competitive technology landscape.
